Faced with a public records request from Mississippi Today for the state's contract with EdBuild, a legislative committee voted Tuesday to adopt a new policy mandating that all contracts it approves be confidential. With samples back from the Jackson crime lab, authorities have determined a flammable substance was not used to ignite the fire at Hopewell MB Church. Greenville Fire Chief Ruben Brown earlier today said “the crime lab returned negative on all samples for a flammable substance.” The fire, he said, still has been ruled as arson, though.

A new report finds that the United States fails to uphold the most basic rights of workers, particularly in the South, where some states "support or collude with employers to infringe upon workers’ rights to peaceful assembly and association." A man has been arrested in the stabbing deaths of two nuns whose bodies were found in their home in rural Mississippi, authorities said. Margaret Held and Paula Merrill, both nurse practitioners, failed to show up for work Thursday at a clinic in Lexington, where they served one of the state’s poorest counties. Authorities believe the killer took the victims’ car, a blue Toyota Corolla, which was later found on an abandoned road less than a mile from their home. But nothing was taken from the house, according to a law enforcement official who has been briefed on the investigation.

Two Catholic nuns were found dead inside their Mississippi home after they didn’t show up to work Thursday, according to police. Both women had stab wounds, the Durant police chief told WJTV. The nuns have been identified as Sister Paula Merrill and Sister Margaret Held. Communities in nine U.S. states that have been hard-hit by coal layoffs are being promised more than 3,000 jobs in several industries through a multimillion-dollar federal grant.
