  • VANITY: "Birdman" Yuck!

Yesterday, I broke my long-standing streak of not having seen an Academy Award winning/nominated movie in several years. A friend talked me into seeing "Birdman," the film starring Michael Keaton. It was perhaps the most excruciating 2 or so hours of my life. Much of the time I couldn't follow what was going on. The basic plot is about a one-time super hero actor now working on a Broadway play. Half the time I didn't know what was the play and what was "reality." Then there were the F bombs. Now I'm not a prude and can tolerate foul language...
  • Justified' Actor Nick Searcy to Direct 'Gosnell' Abortion Crime Drama

With each milestone in its development, the Gosnell movie makes it harder and harder for the media to ignore the name of “America's biggest serial killer.” FX’s Justified star Nick Searcy will direct Gosnell, a crime drama telling what the media refused to – the story of convicted Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell. The Hollywood Reporter broke the story March 18 and detailed how Searcy felt “both excited and humbled” to voice the “story that many in Hollywood were unwilling to tell.”
  • Why ARE today's stars so short? Actors were once strapping hunks and muscular specimens.

Actors were once strapping hunks, thick-thighed he-men who had only to arrive at a film premiere to make everyone’s eyes bulge. These Adonises towered above lesser mortals and had their suits made specially for them because they were such muscular specimens. That’s the way things were when the likes of John Wayne (6ft 4in), Gregory Peck (6ft 3in), Charlton Heston (6ft 3in) and Clint Eastwood (6ft 4in) were in their prime. They were big men playing big characters, often on top of enormous horses or engaged in butch boxing bouts. Compare that with the recent Oscars ceremony, when our own...
  • It Follows is the scariest American horror movie in years

... The central conceit of It Follows, the excellent new horror film from director David Robert Mitchell, sounds eerie the first time you hear it, but it only gets more frightening every time you think about it. And the movie goes out of its way to give you reasons to think about just how horrifying it would be for this to play out in real life ... It Follows is a movie about a curse. While you're cursed, you will be stalked, mercilessly, by an entity that can take any form — including that of someone you love — and...

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)The Star Wars franchise quieted critics of its primarily white casts in November after the trailer for The Force Awakens revealed John Boyega as the first black stormtrooper, but now the series is growing more diverse and will reportedly feature its first lesbian character. Del Rey Books editor Shelly Shapiro has revealed that the upcoming Star Wars novel Lords Of The Sith, written by Paul S. Kemp, will introduce the first canonical LGBT character in the world of the science fiction juggernaut. Sci-fi website Big Shiny Robot reports the upcoming novel will feature a character named Moff Mors, who is...
  • Michele Bachmann Warns Of Impending Sharknado Outside White House (Cuban is Prez, Coulter is VP)

A star has been born. Former Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) on Tuesday starred in a cameo for "Sharknado 3," the cult-classic fantasy movie series featuring vicious, airborne sharks riding deadly tornadoes from the sea. The 2012 Republican presidential candidate was spotted with a film crew outside the White House, presumably before the disaster hits Washington, D.C. "I believe they are growing in size. Congress has to take this seriously because sharknado is a real phenomenon," Bachmann said in a scene, before excusing herself for a vote on the Hill a couple of miles away. After several takes, which were filmed...

The iconic cartoon will be remade as a live-action movie with computer generated characters playing the big-eared elephant and his family. To bring the movie into the 21st century, a family story will be added to reflect dumbo's journey.

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures is talks to acquire feature-film rights for the classic sci-fi novel The Stars My Destination for producer Mary Parent. Written by Alfred Bester, the book (better known as Tiger! Tiger! in the U.K. for its opening-page reprint of a William Blake poem) follows a man who is shipwrecked in space for years when one day a rescue crew passes him by. Angered, he channels his energies into seeking revenge and begins scheming. The key art of the book is enough to get anyone intrigued.
  • Movies Featuring Foreign Characters Played by "Too American" Actors

One thing that bugs me about certain films is when a foreign character is played by an obviously "too American" actor. It doesn't mean the film is ruined but often great movies are jarring when that obviously "too American" actor has a scene. One such movie that was otherwise great was "The Blue Max." It had great aerial combat scenes but it bothered me that the lead character, Lt. Bruno Stachel was being portrayed by the way too American George Peppard. Then there was "Amadeus" in which Mozart was portrayed as if he were a crazy American frat boy by...

Hollywood can't help itself. The glitteries inevitably use the Academy Awards to push their personal politics, sometimes cheap and occasionally not, rewarding razzle-dazzle over real life. This year the two most important Oscars, for best picture and best director, went to "Birdman," about razzle-dazzle, and not "Boyhood," about real life. The birdman is a faded movie star who tries to redeem his popularity by going on the stage to show he can act before a live audience. Such a tale naturally trumps the everyday concerns of "Boyhood," which follows a divorced couple over 12 years and the trials of raising...

British action-adventure Kingsman: The Secret Service features Colin Firth as a dapper, tailored super spy, Samuel L. Jackson as an evil billionaire with a Russell Simmons lisp, and slick shenanigans that’d make James Bond jealous. It also boasts a controversial moment that rivals the explosive, hacker-baiting money shot that earned Sony’s The Interview the ire of North Korea. (Warning: Spoilers ahead.) In a sequence that should get tongues wagging at distributor 20th Century Fox’s sister network Fox News (also owned by Rupert Murdoch), the cheeky comic book movie from Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn makes history—not for reinventing the spy genre,...

In the 1968 Star Trek episode Bread and Circuses, Capt. James Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. Leonard McCoy beam down to Planet 892-IV, a parallel to Earth in almost every way—except Rome never fell. The aliens capture the Enterprise’s familiar trio. Kirk has a predictable romantic encounter. There are televised gladiatorial games that pit the crew against sword-wielding warriors named Flavius and Achilles. The episode even lampoons the cutthroat competition between television broadcasters and their search for ratings. When one of the gladiators refuses to fight with his usual vigor, the master of the games snarls, “You bring this network’s...

It’s not very often that Hollywood unleashes two major theatrical bombs over the same weekend. But that’s what happened when “Jupiter Ascending” and “Seventh Son” both crashed and burned in U.S. theaters on Friday. Warner Bros.’ “Jupiter Ascending,” starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, is quickly dropping in estimates to a thin $18 million weekend at the box office. With a budget north of $175 million, the Wachowskis sci-fi fantasy tentpole could lose tens of millions barring a dramatic turnaround overseas.
  • ‘Jupiter Ascending': 9 Terrible Reviews That Might Knock the Sci-Fi Movie Out of Audiences Orbit

The Wachowski siblings’ “Jupiter Ascending” is not “The Matrix,” according to the majority of critics panning the science fiction spectacle starring Channing Tatum as an intergalactic bounty hunter and Mila Kunis as the oblivious heir to the universe. The Warner Bros. release has 31 percent “rotten” approval rating from 49 critics counted, so far, by Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, even the 15 reviews the critic aggregator considers “fresh” aren’t very positive.
