Two Hollywood Flops in One Weekend at the Box Office
VARIETY STAFF ^ | 07 FEBRUARY 2015 | VARIETY STAFF

It’s not very often that Hollywood unleashes two major theatrical bombs over the same weekend. But that’s what happened when “Jupiter Ascending” and “Seventh Son” both crashed and burned in U.S. theaters on Friday.

Warner Bros.’ “Jupiter Ascending,” starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, is quickly dropping in estimates to a thin $18 million weekend at the box office. With a budget north of $175 million, the Wachowskis sci-fi fantasy tentpole could lose tens of millions barring a dramatic turnaround overseas.

Notice how quickly Annie and Selma fell down the deep dark hole never to be spoken of again.

even the descriptions of these movies sound bad. I heard that audiences literally jeered and boo’d “Jupiter Ascending” a while back before the release.

I think the Wachowski brothers are vastly overrated.

The only reason they struck gold with "The Matrix" because it was the perfect movie to be released at the time (1999).

I saw Project Almanac yesterday. It's a rehash of the time travel- mess up the future plot. But it's well done for a younger generation, with a theme of accepting responsibility for ones actions. It doesn't have elaborate special effects or bizarre episodes of violence. It's a very pleasant movie, without a big budget.

Maybe Hollywood should just give up on huge budgets, over-the-top special effects, sensationalism for the sake of it, and make good movies? I don't think I'm the only moviegoer who doesn't want to be overwhelmed by a movie, just entertained, enlightened, appreciative of a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

It has a muddled target audience. Guys think it is a chick flick with Tatum and Kunis while women have no clue or interest about it.

Yea, at Sundance. I literally jeer at most of the garbage they praise at Sundance. Most of the Wachowski movies are pretty terrible. The Matrix , and V for Vendetta being the only two good movies. Cloud Atlas was “okay”.

It’s February, it’s the time of flops. Generally there’s 1 non-flop in February, and that’s a Valentine’s Day chick flick, other than that it’s the dumping ground and everybody expects all the movies to tank miserably.

I wonder if that isn’t the disinterest in the Wachowskis, but I could be wrong. The movie (despite some neat look SFX) looks atrocious.

Meanwhile Sniper rakes in so much money its set to become the highest ranked war movies of all time while Hollywierd and its stooges (the Left) says how horrible it is. Think there might a little jealousy and lack of reality in their cranial cavities?

Agreed. The fact that it was released in FEB tells us the studio was writing it off.
