King Kong (1933) The landmark in special effects and fantasy captivated the imagination and heralded a new era in which anything anyone could dream up became a cinematic possibility. The closing line was so perfect that Peter Jackson couldn’t resist using it again in his remake seven decades later. But Oscar was obsessed with historical sweep at the time, and gave its top award to the generational...

LOS ANGELES – Paramount Studios has poured an estimated $125 million into the production of “Noah,” casting big names like Emma Watson and Russell Crowe, and trusting their baby to Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky. But six weeks ahead of its theatrical release, concern is brewing that the flick may not be popular with Christians at the box office. Since early drafts of the script were leaked a couple of years ago, “Noah” has been plagued by suggestions that it portrayed the famous flood as a punishment for man’s disrespect for the nature, as opposed to sins against God.
-
The trouble began when Paramount, nervous about how audiences would respond to Aronofsky's fantastical world and his deeply conflicted Noah, insisted on conducting test screenings over the director's vehement objections while the film was a work in progress. Friction grew when a segment of the recruited Christian viewers, among whom the studio had hoped to find Noah's most enthusiastic fans, questioned the film's adherence to the Bible story and reacted negatively to the intensity and darkness of the lead character. Aronofsky's Noah gets drunk, for example, and considers taking drastic measures to eradicate mankind from the planet. Hoping to woo...

Director Darren Aronofsky initially described his vision for Noah, the big-budget interpretation of the Biblical story, as a look at the world's first environmentalist. A person who caught an early test screening of the film says Aronofsky's template is still present in the movie's rough cut. The Hollywood Reporter's new feature on the film, set for a March 28 release, details the behind-the-scenes wrangling between the film's director and the studio, all with an eye on the people of faith curious to see the story on the big screen. Test screenings haven't softened worries that spiritual audiences may not embrace...

It's a cold day here in the South, snowing, raining and freezing. So it was a good day to curl up with my Basset Hound and watch some old sci-fi movies. I started seeing this at the beginning (middle?) of this movie, but I never finished seeing it, and I'm not sure of the name of the movie. There are some westerners (British?) in some African country. The African's take one of the men, put feathers on him and spear him like a chicken. Another man, they put clay on his body, and then bake him over a fire. Then, I believe the third guy successfully kills several of the Africans and makes his escape. Does anyone know what movie this is?

She died on Monday at home in Woodside, California, from natural causes. "She was surrounded by her family and caregivers," a statement said. Born in 1928, the sweet-faced, curly-haired Temple was one of the most popular...

Captain Robert Posey and Pfc. Lincoln Kirstein were the first through the small gap in the rubble blocking the ancient salt mine at Altausee, high in the Austrian Alps in 1945 as World War II drew to a close in May 1945. They walked past one sidechamber in the cool damp air and entered a second one, the flames of their lamps guiding the way. There, resting on empty cardboard boxes a foot off the ground, were eight panels of The Adoration of the Lamb by Jan van Eyck, considered one of the masterpieces of 15th-century European art. In one...

Dan from Squirrel Hill's Blog “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete,†praised by Michelle Obama, is actually quite good As I’ve explained in this 40,000+ word post, I am no fan of President Obama. So when I recently read this article where Michelle Obama praised the recent movie “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete,†I was expecting it to be left wing propaganda.Boy, was I wrong.Having just watched the movie, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it is heavily critical of heroin use, prostitution, and child molestation, and that it portrays education and work in a positive light....
