"The Japanese surrender at the end of WWII allowed U.S. troops to peacefully enter as an occupation force. What they found and how they transformed their former enemy is told through the work of a team of cameramen who recorded it all on color film. They were among the first to witness the devastation wrought by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They also captured on film the first free elections and the birth of Japanese democracy. It was a remarkable journey." History Channel (2006?)
  • Quantum computer that 'computes without running' sets efficiency record

(Phys.org)—Due to quantum effects, it's possible to build a quantum computer that computes without running—or as the scientists explain, "the result of a computation may be learned without actually running the computer." So far, however, the efficiency of this process, which is called counterfactual computation (CFC), has had an upper limit of 50%, limiting its practical applications. Now in a new paper, scientists have experimentally demonstrated a slightly different version called a "generalized CFC" that has an efficiency of 85% with the potential to reach 100%. This improvement opens the doors to realizing a much greater variety of applications, such...

The Atlantic City bomb squad was dispatched to a southern New Jersey home over the weekend after a man dug up a live cannonball in his backyard. Police said the Lower Township man was digging behind his West Bates Avenue home when he discovered the explosive Saturday. The brass-capped cannonball was approximately 5 inches in circumference and was stamped "4k, 85mm," according to police. The bomb squad took an x-ray of the device and determined it was fully functional, officials said. The cannonball was later detonated in an unpopulated area. Police said the discovery is not unusual for this part...

The first-ever global map of antineutrino flux, which accounts for natural and human-made sources of antineutrinos, with the latter making up less than 1 percent of the total flux. Credit: National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency/AGM2015 The neutrino and its antimatter cousin, the antineutrino, are the tiniest subatomic particles known to science. These particles are byproducts of nuclear reactions within stars (including our sun), supernovae, black holes and human-made nuclear reactors. They also result from radioactive decay processes deep within the Earth, where radioactive heat and the heat left over from the planet's formation fuels plate tectonics, volcanoes and Earth's magnetic field....

When President Obama declared earlier this year that “climate change” represents “an immediate risk to our national security” he was absolutely right. Only, the key detail he forgot to mention is precisely why it represents such a risk: because his administration’s crazed faith that renewable energy represents a solution to “climate change” is severely impacting the defensive capabilities of the US military. Consider the case of two giant wind projects scheduled imminently for development near vital US defense facilities. Both ... accord with the Obama administration’s green priority commitments — which apparently take precedence over trivial issues like hurricane predictions,...
