There was a massive exodus of Company Grade Officers out of the USMC and USA in the past few years, which has created an absolute shortage of young officers in today's military ranks.

With incompetent jerks, slimy weasels and self-important losers like George Casey, Jeffery Hammond, John Batiste, Eric Shinseki and Jim Jones in charge, it's little wonder why so many energetic and capable young officers said, "F this, I am outta here!!!!"

I was on a sub in 1986 that hit the bottom of the med. They ended up busting the sonarman who saved us. The Captain was replaced within days as we pulled into Gibraltar to assess the damage. I wish now that I had stayed in, as I would have retired by now.

problem of “risk averse” Lt Col and above has been around for a long time and is the direct result of several factors. Not the least of which is national will and the social experimentation that has so overtaken the Army (less so in the Marine Corps...my old gun club).

Ever since “hum-rel” became vernacular in the 70’s, the trend has been toward making the military more like a cross section of civilian life. It can not be and should not be thus. Another and more damaging process is the loss of stomach for lkprosecuting warfare the way it should be.

Frankly wars should be short. After the enemy is pulverized, look around for someone not so badly burned that they can sign a treaty. If it is “nation building” that is called for, provide a (translated if necessary) copy of the Declaration of Independance, and the Bill of Rights. Sorted.

My nephew was wounded in Afghanistan. Pretty bad head wound. He’s doing very well. Been over a year and he still has some memory problems. Thank the Lord.

I don’t know about that. There are some really good dudes in the higher ranks, and there are idiots. Just like anywhere else.

A LOT of my peers got out after our 15-month Iraq deployment, and their reasons ran the gamut this article discussed. I’m still in, mainly b/c when I decided to leave, my wife and I found out we were pregnant, and I wasn’t going to hope that I would find a job soon enough to cover a multi-thousand dollar birth. Now I’m in Afghanistan. No end in sight to any of this, and the leadership issues talked about in this article are even more pronounced than what I’d seen in the past. And as someone pointed out earlier, I have no desire to serve under GEN Casey, who thinks that it’s OK if my wife, daughter, and I are slaughtered by a haji POS in the name of the Army’s diversity.

I’m most likely getting out when my re-up contract is done. The Army will go rolling along without yet another CPT.

The military has been training communist officers to take over for decades. I’m serious. I believe what we’re seeing now throughout the country...military, government, the courts, etc. are all the result of 30 years of effort. They’ve been very patient and we’ve sat by and allowed it to happen.

No doubt the redundancy of systems left everyone feeling a little too comfortable. If it was one guy with one eye on the periscope and the other eye on the sonar and his hands on the rudder and throttle they might have been okay. :)

One thing though - pretty amazing that the sail can get bent but not torn (and sink), and that the sub went almost on it’s side and only 15 sailors got hurt.
