First daughter Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner ran the annual Army Ten-Miler race in Washington, D.C., on Sunday. The two presidential advisers were cheered on by their three children as they took part in the race along with an estimated 35,000 others. Trump shared photos from the day on her Twitter, including one of her kissing her son, Theodore, on the sidelines, and another of Kushner high-fiving their daughter Arabella. "Army Strong! Hooah!" Trump wrote. "We spent much of the race behind a guy wearing a shirt that said 'if you can read this, I'm not last.'"

My wife's father's WWII foot locker was stored in her mother's basement. We've finally opened it and examined the contents. I'm wondering if anyone here could tell us what some of these items are. Her father was apparently in the Signal Corps (E5 or 6) in France late in the war and there are small booklets on how to behave in France and a few related to Zurich. What I have been able to gather is that his unit couriered officers and information around in small planes. The most fascinating item to me is a Signal Corps message book ---...

A hunter is fighting for life after a bear he shot tumbled down a slope and landed on him. Alaska state police said William McCormick, 28, was also struck by a rock dislodged by the bear as it fell on Saturday afternoon. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Anchorage, where he was in a critical condition. Mr McCormick and his hunting partner, 19-year-old Zachary Tennyson, are both US army soldiers stationed at Alaska’s Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Mr Tennyson was not hurt and alerted authorities by sending a distress signal. Police did not say what kind of bear...

CNN ^ | 1:21 PM ET, Mon October 1, 2018 | Barbara Starr and Ryan Browne,
A US Navy ship had an "unsafe" interaction with a Chinese warship Sunday while the US vessel was conducting a freedom of navigation operation near the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, causing the US ship to maneuver "to prevent a collision," according to US defense officials. "A (People's Republic of China) Luyang destroyer approached USS Decatur in an unsafe and unprofessional maneuver in the vicinity of Gaven Reef in the South China Sea," Capt. Charles Brown, a spokesman for US Pacific Fleet, told CNN in a statement confirming the incident. Brown said the Chinese warship "conducted a...

The decade-old program has been on hold since 2016 amid concerns that immigrant recruits were not being screened well enough, and security threats were slipping through the system. Defense officials shored up the vetting process, and planned to relaunch the program earlier this month. But there was an unexpected barrier when Homeland Security officials said they would not be able to protect new immigrant recruits from being deported when their temporary visas expired after they signed a contract to join the military, the U.S. officials said. They were not authorized to publicly describe internal discussions and spoke on condition of...

  • Hot take: Let’s expand the definition of ‘veteran’ to include social justice warriors

he found himself behind a military veteran at the veterinarian’s office and noted how the veteran was given a discount because of his service to the nation. That got Blumenfeld thinking about the word “veteran” and how it’s unfortunately tied to the military and nasty military things like wars. Isn’t it time to expand the definition of veteran to include those who advocate for change through peace?
  • Ryan Zinke: Naval blockade is an option for dealing with Russia

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke says the U.S. Navy can blockade Russia if needed to keep it from controlling energy supplies in the Middle East as it does in Europe. "The United States has that ability, with our Navy, to make sure the sea lanes are open..." Zinke said on Friday at an industry event in Pittsburgh hosted by the Consumer Energy Alliance. He was there to explain why hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, and the shale energy boom has given the U.S. an edge over its rivals Russia and Iran, by making the U.S. less dependent on foreign sources of energy....

There, I pretty much summed up the ‘Babes For Trump’ Instagram account. America is quite clearly divided between those who support the orange buffoon and those who don’t, and there’s money to be made from picking a side and going hard.(snip) Maybe it’s just their love for Trump that sees these women below send their photos to the ‘Babes For Trump’ Instagram account, or maybe they’re hoping to gain followers so that they can lobby brands to work with them. Probably gun brands or Russian cosmetic products. Anyway, here’s the current line-up on that Instagram account:(snip) Yes, that image in...

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) - Driving through town, you often come across yard sales. Everyone has a different reason for cleaning out the house or just trying to make some extra cash. But for one Cambria County man, there's a bigger reason he's selling his belongings. One man is selling his items to pay for a funeral and two strangers have stepped up to help. For several weeks, Willie Davis has been setting up his blue canopy and selling his possessions in a yard sale in Brownstown. Last month, David Dunkleberger was one of his customers. "At the end, when we...

Divers have discovered the wreck a Chinese warship a century after it was lost to the depths of the Yellow sea. Researchers had been hunting for several years before they found the incredible 'time capsule' of a wreck. It was identified thanks to a gold-gilded wooden plaque with Jingyuan written on it. It went down in the Yellow sea during the first Sino-Japanese war in September 1894, with only seven out of 270 crewmen surviving. Experts managed to pinpoint the site by looking through historical documents and photographs taken by a a Japanese sailor before it sank.

One hundred years ago this morning, at 5:30 a.m. Central European Time, the 1.2 million-man American Expeditionary Force launched all of its available combat strength into the largest and arguably the bloodiest battle in American history: the six-week Meuse-Argonne offensive that continued through the armistice at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. The horrific and protracted battle brought a decisive end to the first war in which Americans fought on European soil. Though it was filled with then-famous incidents and notable Americans, the ordeal of the Meuse-Argonne is far less remembered today than...

For Maj. Christina Hopper, the first black female pilot to fly a fighter jet in war, the military was a place of diversity unlike any other. Maj. Christina Hopper’s family is about as military as it gets. The legacy of service in her family made being a military brat a key part of her identity. Born in Norway while both her parents were stationed there with the Air Force, Hopper didn’t move to the United States until she was 4 years old. Her trajectory, following in her parents’ footsteps to the military, was normal, expected almost. But Hopper’s story deviates...
