BOSTON, MA – Three new Emerson College polls show a tight race shaping up between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump in the key Rust Belt States of Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania. The two are deadlocked at 43% in Ohio. Clinton leads by three points in Pennsylvania (46% to 43%) and by five in Michigan (45% to 40%). The Libertarian Party’s Gary Johnson garners 7% of the vote in Pennsylvania and Michigan and 10% in Ohio. A recent study by an Oklahoma think tank found that teachers’ salaries in Michigan are the highest in the nation when adjusted for the lower cost of living here. When salaries are adjusted to reflect the difference between prices here and the national average, Michigan teachers on average earned the equivalent of $69,888 in the 2015-16 school year. The study was authored by Byron Schlomach of the Oklahoma-based 1889 Institute, a free-market think tank. Schlomach said in an email he used salary data from a National Education Association survey. Michigan’s average teacher salary when unadjusted is $63,878, ranking 10th nationally....

A resident of a township in southeastern Michigan thinks she was wrongly denied a request for township documents related to a proposed landfill expansion. Salem Township denied the Freedom of Information Act request, saying the information the requester asked for did not exist. But records subsequently acquired from Washtenaw County show that the relevant documents do exist, and were in the township’s possession when the request was submitted. Tracey Birkenhauer of Northville sent a FOIA request to Salem Township on March 25, 2016, requesting all documentation submitted to the township since 2010 regarding the expansion of the Arbor Hills landfill....

A Wayne State University professor who blamed the Flint water crisis on “structural racism” and a decline in state revenue sharing based his assertions in part on an incorrect estimate from an outdated revenue projection. Audited financial reports from the state of Michigan and city of Flint showing actual revenue collections contradict the professor’s source.
