A recent study by an Oklahoma think tank found that teachers’ salaries in Michigan are the highest in the nation when adjusted for the lower cost of living here. When salaries are adjusted to reflect the difference between prices here and the national average, Michigan teachers on average earned the equivalent of $69,888 in the 2015-16 school year. The study was authored by Byron Schlomach of the Oklahoma-based 1889 Institute, a free-market think tank. Schlomach said in an email he used salary data from a National Education Association survey. Michigan’s average teacher salary when unadjusted is $63,878, ranking 10th nationally....

A resident of a township in southeastern Michigan thinks she was wrongly denied a request for township documents related to a proposed landfill expansion. Salem Township denied the Freedom of Information Act request, saying the information the requester asked for did not exist. But records subsequently acquired from Washtenaw County show that the relevant documents do exist, and were in the township’s possession when the request was submitted. Tracey Birkenhauer of Northville sent a FOIA request to Salem Township on March 25, 2016, requesting all documentation submitted to the township since 2010 regarding the expansion of the Arbor Hills landfill....

In Traverse City, a couple could lose thousands of dollars in cash as well as their home because of the state’s loose civil forfeiture laws. Their case shows the perspective of both sides of this issue, but the solution is fairly simple – governments should not be able to take ownership of people’s assets unless they are convicted of a crime. The Traverse City Record-Eagle does a great job laying out the situation. The Traverse Narcotics Team believes Kenneth and Mary Murray profited from what it calls “ill-gotten gains.” The law enforcement agency accuses the couple of violating the state’s...

Acres of shiny new Chevrolet Camaros temporarily parked outside a Lansing auto plant: temporarily because they’re being snapped up by customers almost as fast as the state-of-the-art facility can ship them out. The image may sum up the evidence assembled in a new study from the respected Fraser Institute in Canada. Called “Ontario Versus Michigan: Lessons from the Wolverine State,” the report examines how the neighboring state and province have done economically before and after the dramatic business climate changes enacted in Michigan beginning in 2011. A state economic resurgence has followed in the wake of the reforms, which included...

The Michigan Conservative Coalition has planned a series of events to show support for presidential candidate Donald Trump throughout the state of Michigan on August 30th. This grassroots organization has a unique goal, one that seems to align with many of Trump’s supporters, and that is they are tired of Republicans abandoning their party’s principles to expand the scope of government beyond reason. From their website, the group’s stated goals are: We believe our Republican Party Platform is a great document and the recipe for success and opportunity and the heritage that makes America great. We are tired of Republicans...
  • Prof's Report Blaming Flint Decline on 'Structural Racism' Used Bad Data

A Wayne State University professor who blamed the Flint water crisis on “structural racism” and a decline in state revenue sharing based his assertions in part on an incorrect estimate from an outdated revenue projection. Audited financial reports from the state of Michigan and city of Flint showing actual revenue collections contradict the professor’s source. Law professor Peter Hammer released a report claiming that state revenue sharing payments to Flint declined from $20 million in 2006 to $7.9 million in 2012. But both city and state financial statements indicate this statement was inaccurate and that Hammer’s overall report understated Flint’s...

Today in Dimondale Michigan Donald Trump gave what was not only the best speech of his campaign but a speech that will one day be seen as a landmark in the emergence of a new Republican Party – a party finally returning to its roots as the party of Lincoln. If this sounds like hyperbole ask yourself what other Republican leader in recent memory has addressed America’s African American communities in this voice: The African-American community has given so much to this country. They’ve fought and died in every war since the Revolution. They’ve lifted up the conscience of our...

Americans everywhere are struggling to come to grips with recent high-profile tragedies arising from violent encounters between police and civilians. For both police and many motorists, routine traffic stops have become nerve-wracking events. This is the backdrop against which the trustees of Michigan State University have imposed a new ordinance that will increase the number of needless traffic stops on its campuses. The measure takes effect on Aug. 15, and bans smoking or using smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes anywhere on MSU property. The ordinance applies even to personal vehicles on public streets that pass through the university. Violators can be...

Double-digit Obamacare premium hikes projected in 2017 may bode in Donald Trump’s favor, as several swing states are being impacted by double-digit increases under the law and consumers are expected to see the hikes around Nov. 1 — one week before heading to the polls. Trump has promised to repeal and replace Obamacare, but Hillary Clinton has vowed to make the Obamacare exchanges work. Some say the way she would do that is through raising taxes.

Newschannel 3 spoke to experts Wednesday to explain why background checks in applications for firearms are being delayed. Some licensed gun dealers have received an email from the FBI, after noticing delays in background checks for customers. The state of Michigan will write more than $1 billion in subsidy checks this year to favored businesses selected by politicians and government economic development officials. These are dollars paid by Michigan taxpayers, which the state then redistributes to corporate beneficiaries. The subsidy checks are styled as "refundable tax credits," and a significant portion of them were approved during a subsidy binge in the last two years of former Gov. Jennifer Granholm's administration, in 2009 and 2010. Each company has its own agreement with the state, and many of the agreements call for tax breaks and cash payments for as...
