He said bad economic conditions were to blame. In November, Long Beach voters approved a measure requiring hotels with 100 or more rooms to pay their employees $13 an hour. In a letter to employees posted at the hotel Monday,...

Edward Yacuta felt rushed and nervous when he took a test to determine whether he was ready for college-level English classes at Long Beach City College. The 18-year-old did poorly on the exam, even though he was getting good grades in an Advanced Placement English class at Long Beach's Robert A. Millikan High School. Most community colleges would assign students like Yacuta to a remedial class, but he will avoid that fate at Long Beach. The two-year school is trying out a new system this fall that will place students who graduated from the city's high schools in courses based...

LONG BEACH, Calif. — A former state mental hospital director was sentenced Wednesday to 248 years in prison for molesting his adopted foster son over 10 years as part of what prosecutors claimed was a pattern of abuse that spanned four decades and ensnared a dozen young boys, many of whom appeared in court as grown men to confront him. Claude Foulk Jr., 63, showed little emotion as Superior Court Judge James B. Pierce dressed him down for nearly 20 minutes before handing down the maximum sentence. The judge called Foulk a monster and a "sick, sick man," drawing applause...

The sprawling factory, barring an unlikely rise in demand, is expected to shut down completely by the end of next year. Time is running out at Southern California's last major conventional aircraft factory. Citing declining orders for its C-17 cargo planes, Boeing Co. said it was cutting 900 of the 3,700 jobs at its sprawling Long Beach plant. Barring congressional intervention or a spate of foreign orders — which analysts say is unlikely — the factory is expected to shut down completely by the end of next year. "There's just not that much of a market for this aircraft," said...

Citing a shrinking Pentagon budget, Boeing Co. said Monday that it was relocating two key defense programs from Long Beach, where it employs 800 people, to Oklahoma City. Beginning next year, the Chicago company said it would move its C-130 military cargo avionics and its B-1 bomber modernization programs. The relocation is expected to begin in the first quarter of next year and be completed by the end of 2012. The move would deal another blow to the California economy, where unemployment stands at 12.3%. In January, Northrop Grumman Corp. announced plans to move its headquarters to the Washington, D.C.,...
