Boeing to relocate two key defense programs from Long Beach to Oklahoma City (800 jobs leaving CA)
LA Times ^ | 8/2/10 | W.J. Hennigan

Citing a shrinking Pentagon budget, Boeing Co. said Monday that it was relocating two key defense programs from Long Beach, where it employs 800 people, to Oklahoma City.

Beginning next year, the Chicago company said it would move its C-130 military cargo avionics and its B-1 bomber modernization programs. The relocation is expected to begin in the first quarter of next year and be completed by the end of 2012.

The move would deal another blow to the California economy, where unemployment stands at 12.3%. In January, Northrop Grumman Corp. announced plans to move its headquarters to the Washington, D.C., area from Los Angeles, where the company has been since it was founded in 1939.

I would say it has more to do with CA’s ridiculous taxes and stupid regulations than it does the Pentagon budget.

The workers at their C-17 unit have been conducting some kind of strike. I was doing some flight training at Long Beach in May and June and was flying over the picket lines.

They’re just down the street from me, I live on the same street Boeing operates in Long Beach. Sorry to see the jobs go but I blame this %@$##! state.

There used to be some reason to spread the contracts around to different Congressional districts . . . to ensure that each State’s delegation had some reason to consider support of a program.

California has demonstrated that it disdains our armed forces. Their Reps are too interested in health care and amnesty to worry about freedom. Oklahoma, I’m proud to say, voted for Palin-McCain (at least Anti-Obama) in all 77 counties of the State. We support TInker Field and the men and women who work there, both with our actions, our words and our wallets.

You would think that the Democrat controlled California state legislatures would have noticed the mass migration from their territory...........but, they have been too busy working on explicit sex education for small school children and state funded sex changes for adults.........

Feinstein and Boxer have done nothing to encourage the defense industries to stay. Esp. Boxer, she is openly hostile to defense contractors, as are most of the state democrats who control the tax system.

Tough time to sell a house in CA. Gonna be tough for a long time. Still better to move away. I’m leaving CA for good. Maybe ski again at Heavenly or Mammoth but live here again, no way, not while I have a job/income. I suppose that every state will eventually destroy every single productive person. I guess it’s only natural to bite the hand that feeds you. Seems stupid to me though.

Although I'm in Texas and there's a rivalry between our states (good natured, I'll add), Oklahoma is a wonderful place. In the 2008 presidential election, 0bama didn't carry a single county. The people are great, the cities are clean and the countryside is beautiful.

The right type of Californians will be welcomed in Oklahoma.

Although I’m a lifelong Californian and Angeleno, I think the city and state are getting just what they deserve. So is Oklahoma. Good for them.

I’d bet that at least half are typical Calif. crazies who would NEVER leave even if the state fell apart in an earthquake

I’d be willing to bet that a big chunk of Boeing’s LA workforce is permanently stoned out of their gourds on “medicinal” marijuana. That should be less of a problem is Oklahoma.

The average home in Long Beach is 400K, the average home in OKC is 112K. Even a significant pay decrease could still end in more money actually staying in their pocket.
