LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — The Queen Mary will rendezvous with her sister ship Tuesday evening in the Long Beach harbor.

The Queen Elizabeth II will tie up near its sister ship, the Queen Mary, around 6:30 p.m. The two vessels will exchange whistle blasts in a mutual salute at 7 p.m., followed by fireworks at 7:30 p.m.

The last time these two ships were together was in 1967 during the Queen Mary’s final transatlantic voyage. That Queen Elizabeth was an earlier version of the present-day ship.

The decks of the Queen Mary will be open to the public at no charge beginning at 4 p.m.

Following Tuesday’s meeting, the QE2 will sail to Puerto Vallarta.

As a former resident of Long Beach I confess my love for the Queen Mary.

She is well worth the trip to see and photograph.

That said, she really is more of a cousin to the QEII than a "sister")

I completely agree. The Queen Mary is well worth a visit. It’s like a journey back in time.

I built the casteau museum of the sea on the Queen Mary.

The English unloaded a real pile of crap on Long Beach, it amazing it made it around the tip of Argentina without breaking up and sinking!!!

She’ll never sail again. But she is a pretty old gal.

Thought I’d heard not too long ago that the QEII was on its way east to be broken up for scrap? Was that wrong, or was there a reprieve along the way?

There used to be a huge dive show on the Queen Mary every year and there was a whole group of us that went and stayed 3-4 days on her. OMG we had the best times and yes I have always loved her too.
We used to do the dive show and there was always a really nice exclusive dinner under the wings of the Spruce Goose.
They moved the Goose and the dive show turned into nothing but exotic vacation planners so we quit going.

Last I’d heard, there was a maybe reprive....she might be turned into a luxury hotel in the UAE. Some sheik or another has offered to buy her and refit her into a hotel, like the Queen Mary.

There's the "Queen Elizabeth" and the "Queen Elizabeth II". Different ships.

Agree about Long Beach buying the Queen Mary. It’s a piece a crap and a big money loser.

Do you know the Long Beach voters approved a required “living wage” for 99+ room hotels? That will mean the end of the QM Hotel.
