Democratic Sen. Jenny Oropeza has died following a prolonged illness. She was 53.
Oropeza had been largely absent from the Senate since her office announced in May that she had been diagnosed with a blood clot in her abdomen. The Long Beach Democrat, first elected to the Senate in 2006, had battled liver cancer and a tumor during her time in the Assembly.
Her own battle with cancer inspired her to become a champion of cancer prevention in the Legislature.

Thanks for the heads-up.
I have loved ones who have battled cancer and won and others who have battled cancer and lost. I don’t think anyone here would have ever voted for her, but I hate seeing anyone fall to cancer.
Was she a liberal or a conservative? If she was a staunch conservative, I’m sorry to hear she died. If she was a lib, I would have preferred that she just retired in shame. But, The Great Scorer knows best about these things.
God bless and be with her family during this time of loss.
I guess this refers to a California person?
Amen. Cancer is a common enemy.
So, Arnie gets to appoint a new person?
I think she’s the one who wanted to ban plastic shopping bags and/or have the supermarket charge for them, among other things. A greenie.
Many of us have lost loved ones to cancer- sometimes there are survivors. At any rate I would not wish this on any one. Been there done that with a loss chalked up each time.
RIP.
What happens now in our district? It’s gerrymandered Dem anyway.
Never heard of her, but then we sold our place at 59th, and California in NLB, and moved to Riverside in 1987. NOT fond of LB even though that’s where I grew up. Fremont, Jefferson, Wilson.
Yeah, obligatory RIP.
Hate to be crass, but what will happen to her seat? will Arnie appoint, or special election or what.
May The Lord give peace to her family.
may she find peace as well as her family....
Agreed. And if she was a liberal, may we and our families find peace as we try to undo the damage she likely did.
Liberal - much more liberal than her district.
She voted in lockstep with her party.
She was a state senator up for reelection in two weeks.
It may give the Republican a better chance at defeating her.
(Yeah, I know — but as I said on the California board, dead people vote for dead people in California).
