by Jake Anderson November 7, 2012 New Ulm-based Associated Milk Producers, Inc. (AMPI) recently informed the 130 employees at its Dawson plant that the facility will close and their positions will be eliminated. Communications Director Sarah Schmidt told Twin Cities Business on Wednesday that the plant closure stems from the company’s sale of its “aseptic” business, which makes shelf-stable cheese sauces and puddings. The sale of the business to Illinois-based Bay Valley Foods is expected to close in December, and production at the Dawson plant will gradually be transferred to Bay Valley Foods’ Illinois facility through that time, Schmidt said....

(Associated Posers) – Staten Island, NY - Hanna Dugaway stood in knee-deep water as she announced her vote for Barack Obama. A week after hurricane Sandy came through she is still waiting for FEMA to bring an MRE, “Meals Ready to Eat”. “He looked very Presidential” she said “That is really the image I had when I voted, or maybe I was just close to starvation but the Democrats were giving food to their voters, so it was an easy choice” …....... Obamanomics grinds grimly onward,  as CNBC brings word that on the day after the election, “Boeing announced a major restructuring of its defense division on Wednesday that will cut 30 percent of management jobs from 2010 levels, close facilities in California, and consolidate several business units to cut costs.”  It was sweet of them to keep that under wraps until after the election, wasn’t it? And that’s not even the dreaded “sequestration” layoffs, which Obama broke the law to convince defense contractors to keep under wraps until after the election.  Those are yet to come.  The upside to living in a banana Republic...

Last night's victory for the President marks the first time since its inception that Obamacare is no longer a what-if; it is the future of health care in America. It also means a near immediate impact on the economy. With 20 or so new or higher taxes set to be implemented, ranging from a $123 billion surtax on investment income, through the $20 billion medical device tax, all the way down to the $600 million executive compensation limit, Obamacare will be a nearly unbearable tax burden on the economy. Who will pay? The middle-class workforce, of course. So with another...

WASHINGTON — U.S. employers posted fewer job openings in September after advertising more in August than first estimated. The report suggests hiring will likely remain modest in the coming months. The Labor Department said Tuesday that job openings dropped by 100,000 to 3.56 million, the fewest in five months. August’s openings were revised up to 3.66 million. ...... The number of available jobs has jumped about 63 percent since July 2009, one month after the recession ended. It remains well below the more than 4 million jobs a month advertised before the recession began in December 2007. The job market...

Navistar International Corp. (NAV) plans to close its Garland, Texas, assembly plant, as the embattled truck maker shrinks it manufacturing capacity in response to falling demand for commercial trucks. The plant near Dallas employs about 900 workers and has been Navistar's primary site for assembling heavy-duty trucks in recent years. The company intends to cease operations at Garland during first half of next year. Closing Garland is expected to lower Navistar's costs by increasing the utilization of other plants. SNIP Navistar, which also makes military trucks and school buses, has lost $241 million during the first nine months of its...

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate rose from 7.8% to 7.9% for October. The number of unemployed in the US rose from 12,088,000 in September to 12,258,000 in October. An increase of 170,000. The good news is that non farm payrolls increased by +171,000. Bear in mind that these numbers are misleading because Lockheed announced layoffs of 123,000, but was asked by the Obama Administration to delay the layoffs until after the election. So, add 123,000 to the number of unemployed and deduct 123,000 from the NFP jobs created of 171,000. So, the actual increase in...

WPS Health Insurance announced today that it is adjusting its resources in response to competitive pressures and recent losses in the government contract market. The company will adjust resources across the corporation. Staffing impacts could affect 600 positions, though this number is subject to change. The actual adjustments and timeframe depends on the outcome of protests and additional opportunities. Adjustments will occur in phases over the next year. Notices to staff will begin as early as November 2012. Recent activity in the company’s government business lines makes the reductions necessary.

Who needs an “October Surprise” when the business headlines are broadcasting the imminent layoff bomb in neon lights? The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last Tuesday that employers issued 1,316 “mass layoff actions” (affecting 50 workers or more) in September; more than 122,000 workers were affected. USA Today financial reporter Matt Krantz wrote that “much of the recent layoff activity is connected to what’s been the slowest period of earnings growth since the third quarter...
