Layoff notices will be sent to about 410 Hawker Beechcraft employees, as the company plans to close facilities in three locations and shut down its business jet production. The Wichita Eagle reported that 60-day notices will be issued Nov. 9 to affected employees in Wichita, Kan., where the company is based, along with Little Rock, Ark., where the last of the Hawker business jets are being completed. Job cuts will also be made in San Antonio and Mesa, Ariz., the Eagle reported, quoting from a letter to employees signed by CEO Steve Miller and Chairman Bill Boisture:

Research in Motion, the maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, did a layoff at its U.S. headquarters in Irving Wednesday, a source familiar with the situation said. The source, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, confirmed that a majority of those affected were call-center staffers. There was speculation that approximately 200 staffers were let go, although the source could not confirm a number. RIM employs in the ballpark of 700 people in Irving, the source said. The federal tax credit that subsidizes wind energy is set to expire at the end of the year, and political uncertainty is putting the brakes on the wind industry. (AMPI) recently informed the 130 employees at its Dawson plant that the facility will close and their positions will be eliminated. Communications Director Sarah Schmidt told Twin Cities Business on Wednesday that the plant closure stems from the company’s sale of its “aseptic” business, which makes shelf-stable cheese sauces and puddings. The sale of the business to Illinois-based Bay Valley Foods is expected to close in December, and production at the Dawson plant will gradually be transferred to Bay Valley Foods’ Illinois facility through that time, Schmidt said....

TE Connectivity, which makes electrical connectors for appliances and other devices, will close its factory in north High Point and eliminate 620 jobs, according to a company official. The closure and layoffs will happen in phases through the end of 2013, said Tom Peacock, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania-based firm said. TE Connectivity (NYSE: TEL) was known as Tyco Electronics until a name-change in 2011. WASHINGTON — U.S. employers posted fewer job openings in September after advertising more in August than first estimated. The report suggests hiring will likely remain modest in the coming months. The Labor Department said Tuesday that job openings dropped by 100,000 to 3.56 million, the fewest in five months. August’s openings were revised up to 3.66 million. ...... Navistar International Corp. (NAV) plans to close its Garland, Texas, assembly plant, as the embattled truck maker shrinks it manufacturing capacity in response to falling demand for commercial trucks. The plant near Dallas employs about 900 workers and has been Navistar's primary site for assembling heavy-duty trucks in recent years. The company intends to cease operations at Garland during first half of next year. Closing Garland is expected to lower Navistar's costs by increasing the utilization of other plants. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate rose from 7.8% to 7.9% for October. The number of unemployed in the US rose from 12,088,000 in September to 12,258,000 in October. An increase of 170,000. The good news is that non farm payrolls increased by +171,000. Bear in mind that these numbers are misleading because Lockheed announced layoffs of 123,000, but was asked by the Obama Administration to delay the layoffs until after the election. WPS Health Insurance announced today that it is adjusting its resources in response to competitive pressures and recent losses in the government contract market. The company will adjust resources across the corporation. Staffing impacts could affect 600 positions, though this number is subject to change.
