“Travel to Memphis, where Sun Studios artists Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley usher in the era of rockabilly. Ray Charles crosses America’s racial divide by recording a country album. Patsy Cline shows off Music City’s smooth new Nashville Sound.” As the 1960’s began Country & Western music was being heavily influenced by the rock & roll sound. A new generation of artists, songwriters and shrewd producers would record some great American music during this transitional era.

Country music is the most American of musical idioms, alongside jazz. With a longer history than rock and roll or hip-hop, country has produced a powerful pantheon of memorable artists, albums, and songs. Growing up, I pretended not to like country music, even though it was the music I heard my dad listen to the most (while my mom turned me on to the incredible pop and rock of the ‘60s and ‘70s). Nowadays, I’ve shaken that youthful pretension and will admit to enjoying most types of country’s many subgenres. I also have to admit that compiling a list...

And I heard as it were the noise of thunder One of the four beasts saying come and see and I saw And behold a white horse There's a man going around taking names And he decides who to free and who to blame Everybody won't be treated all the same There'll be a golden ladder reaching down When the Man comes around The hairs on your arm will stand up At the terror in each sip and in each sup Will you partake of that last offered cup? Or disappear into the potter's ground When the Man comes around...

Here's ..side of the musician you didn’t see in the film 'Walk the Line,' released 12 years ago this weekend. Johnny Cash had two loves, and we all met one of them thanks to the biopic “Walk the Line,” which was released in 2005. Her name was June Carter. But Cash had another love. A higher love. One never mentioned by name in the movie: Jesus Christ. There are some hints about that other love in the film. In an early scene, a young Cash, played brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix, is auditioning for the man he hopes might make him...

God Bless Robert E Lee Johnny Cash When Robert E Lee surrendered the Confederacy Jefferson Davis was upset about it He said how dare that man resent an order From the president of the Confederate States of America Then somebody told him that General Lee had made the decision himself In order to save lives because he felt that the battle comin' up Would cost about twenty thousand lives on both sides And he said two hundred and forty thousand dead already is enough So this song is not about the North or the South but about the bloody brother...

Christmas carols are a favorite part of the holidays and 46 years ago the sentiment was the same. In 1970, country music legend Johnny Cash took part in the tradition of performing holiday songs when he performed his own rendition of the Christmas classic “Little Drummer Boy” on The Johnny Cash Show. The variety television show was hosted by the “Ring of Fire” singer and ran on air for two seasons. Country stars that were featured on air included Bill Monroe, The Carter Family, Bob Dylan and many more. All episodes were shot at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, which at...

A challenging, years-long survey has uncovered 14 new species of U.S. tarantula, including one named after Johnny Cash. Some, like Aphonopelma madera, live on forested "sky islands," mountains surrounded on all sides by Arizona's deserts. Others, like the tiny Aphonopelma atomicum, nestle themselves in silk-lined burrows near Nevada's nuclear test sites. And Aphonopelma johnnycashi, named for the legendary country musician, makes its home near Folsom Prison, California. True to form, adult males are mostly black, a getup of which Cash--the Man in Black--would have no doubt been proud. (Also see "New Tarantula (Not Beetle) Named After John Lennon.") To uncover...

As my poll yesterday indicated there is still a lot of controversy over Ted Cruz’s eligibility to hold the office of POTUS. If we were talking about another dark-skinned Democrat this might not be an issue butt since we’re dealing with a white-Hispanic R-Word the words of former Democrat Speaker of the House Tom Foley apply: “The nature of the evidence is irrelevant; it’s the seriousness of the charge that matters.†So there will be inquiries, probes, investigations and ultimately the “science†of eligibility will be “settled†by the courts as all “real science†is.Watch out for incoming Krypton!I note...

All of a sudden, the Ring of Fire is starting to tremble violently. Last month, we had a whole bunch of major earthquakes along the Ring of Fire, and this month volcanoes all over the Ring of Fire are erupting. Of course, there has always been seismic activity within this giant band that stretches around the Pacific Ocean. After all, approximately 75 percent of all volcanoes are located in the Ring of Fire and approximately 90 percent of all global earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire. But what is alarming is that the level of activity appears to be...

Beginning Wednesday, you’ll be able to put Johnny Cash on all your mail. A “forever” stamp honoring the country music legend will go on sale, coinciding with the end of a yearlong celebration of the Man in Black’s life and career. A free public concert in Nashville by family and friends of the singer also will honor his six-decade career. The 46-cent stamp will feature a 1963 image of Cash shot by Frank Bez during the photo session for the album “Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash.” Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, said the stamp is unusual, and...

It’s an early scene in the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the Line. The young Cash, played by Joaquin Phoenix, is auditioning for the man who might make him the next Elvis Presley. That man was Sam Phillips, the Sun Records impresario from Memphis. The fictional Cash walks into the room and begins playing a Gospel song. The fictional Phillips is not impressed, and tells the fictional Cash that no one listens to Gospel anymore, and that he should play something more meaningful. More relevant.Cash did. The rest was history.Well, not quite. It turns out that Cash, who was born on...

PROVO, Utah, - A Utah jury was not persuaded by a prosecutor's attempt to use a Johnny Cash song to make his case, and acquitted a man of aggravated assault. Fidel Quintana, 43, of Orem, was cleared Tuesday by a Provo jury in an October incident involving a drunken fight with two other men, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Thursday. Prosecutors said Quintana used a knife to stab a man under the chin, cutting his mouth and tongue. The defendant's attorneys said he took the action in self-defense. Prosecutor Randy Kennard said he used Cash's ballad "Don't Take Your Guns...
