Heather Leavell, a fourth-generation Girl Scouts troop leader and proud mother of an 8-year-old Brownie, could not sleep the night after she found out the Girl Scouts would be marching in Friday’s inaugural parade for President-elect Donald Trump. How, she wondered, could an organization that preaches respect and honesty and that seeks to empower young girls march for a man who has repeatedly demeaned women and bragged about groping their genitals? “My blood was boiling,” said Leavell, a 43-year-old Melrose resident. “My whole life, I’ve been very proud to be a Girl Scout. But if they march in this inauguration,...

Trump, who is starting the day at St. John’s Church for a service at 8:30 a.m., will have six religious prayers as part of the ceremony, three invocations and three benedictions. That’s a record, according to Jim Bendat, the author of “Democracy’s Big Day,” who was speaking on CNN Friday morning. The first invocation is scheduled for 11:21 a.m. and the final benediction is scheduled for 12:14 p.m. Trump will be sworn in using both his own Bible, gifted to him by his...

Thousands of defiant New Yorkers filled President-elect Donald Trump’s backyard Thursday on the eve of his inauguration for a star-studded, full-throated statement of protest. Joined by celebrities, government leaders and union organizers, angry protesters flooded Columbus Circle, Broadway and several blocks of Central Park West. “There are those who are working to divide us,” said “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon. “We are not going back. We’re not turning around. “Yes we’ve had a setback. But we can see it as a setback or we can see it as a challenge. And where there is a challenge there is...

I read the daily office for my morning devotions. Today's Old Testament reading is Isaiah 45:18-45. The reason it struck me is that the whole chapter begins with these words-- "Thus says the LORD to His anointed, to CYRUS, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed" The actual text of the reading, addressed to Cyrus is: 18For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it;...

Many of our readers ask about U.S. flag rules and regulations. On June 22, 1942, Congress passed a joint resolution, later amended on December 22, 1942, that encompassed what has come to be known as the U.S. Flag Code. Here are highlights: ....The flag should be displayed on all days, especially on New Year’s Day, January 1 Inauguration Day, January 20....

It was a remarkable live TV moment. During Tucker Carlson's Fox News show, reporter Griff Jenkins was at the scene of an anti-Trump demonstration in DC where a fire had been set in the street. Suddenly, a young boy [maybe 10-11] stepped up to say that he “kind of started the fire.” When Jenkins asked why he started the fire, the boy, who identified himself as “Carter,” said “because I felt like it and I’m just sort of saying, screw the president.” View the video here.
