Hillary Clinton’s campaign is urging officials in Florida to extend the state’s voter registration deadline in response to Hurricane Matthew.“The one thing we are hoping and expecting is that officials in Florida will adapt deadlines to account for the storm,” Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said Thursday. “The voter registration deadline in Florida is Oct. 11 and our hope would be that a little bit more time would be given for people who were expecting to be able to get registered before the election.”“We certainly expect that the governor and local officials will make that possible,” he said.

Matthew strengthened back into a Category 4 hurricane Thursday, the National Hurricane Center announced, as emergency officials urged some 2 million people from Florida to South Carolina to pack up and get out. "Do not go on the beach. This will kill you," Florida Gov. Rick Scott warned Thursday. "Unfortunately, this is going to kill people."

Gasoline prices in the U.S. Southeast spiked in September after a major gasoline pipeline suffered a leak and was forced to temporarily shut down. The Southeast may see gasoline prices rise again because the problems with the pipeline are not over. The Colonial Pipeline is a 2.5 million barrel per day system that carries refined products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and heating oil. It consists of a massive 5,500 miles of pipeline, traveling from the Gulf Coast up to the mid-Atlantic. Fuels refined along the Gulf Coast can reach as far as New York Harbor.

Weather Channel Meteorologist Jen Delgado is facing sharp criticism and some are asking for her to be fired after she blamed Haiti's deforestation in part to hungry children eating trees. In a weather report as Hurricane Matthew prepared to make landfall in Haiti, Delgado noted that Haiti suffers from a deforestation problem. "They take all the trees down, they burn the trees," and she continued with a curious claim, "Even the kids there, they're so hungry, they actually eat the trees."

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley said coastal evacuations and school closings will start Wednesday. Haley urged residents evacuating coastal communities to make sure they had a full tank of gasoline. The goal is to make sure S.C. residents get 100 miles away from the coast, Haley said. Hurricane Matthew-- a Category 4 storm-- made landfall in western Haiti on Tuesday morning as towns and villages in the country braced for life-threatening winds, rains and a storm surge. The dangerous storm was also dropping heavy rains on other parts of Haiti, the hemisphere's poorest country where many people live in flimsy shacks in areas prone to flooding.

As Hurricane Matthew churns across the Caribbean, Florida officials are preparing in the event the category 4 storm moves closer toward the Sunshine State. While visiting the City of Hialeah Emergency Operations Center Monday, Gov. The commander of the U.S. Navy base at Guantánamo Bay on Saturday ordered the evacuation of families and other so-called “non-essential personnel” from the remote outpost in southeast Cuba ahead of Hurricane Matthew. “A mandatory evacuation has been called for all non-essential personnel,” said Guantánamo base spokeswoman Julie Ripley, in a statement issued just before 1 p.m. “The location will be announced once details are finalized. This includes dependents, school-aged children, special needs families, and their pets.”

Hurricane Matthew grew into a powerful Category 5 storm late Friday as it crossed the Caribbean Sea on a course that could have it pounding Jamaica within days. On this basis, the initial intensity has been increased to 140 kt, making Matthew a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
