Gov. Nikki Haley: Coastal evacuations, school closings start Wednesday

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley said coastal evacuations and school closings will start Wednesday.

Haley urged residents evacuating coastal communities to make sure they had a full tank of gasoline.

The goal is to make sure S.C. residents get 100 miles away from the coast, Haley said.

All of the coastal schools will be closed including in the following counties: Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Berkeley, Calhoun, Charleston, Clarendon, Colleton, Darlington, Dillon, Dorchester, Florence, Georgetown, Hampton, Horry, Jasper, Lee, Lexington, Marlboro, Orangeburg, Richland, Sumter, and Williamsburg.

Officials expect to evacuate 1.1 million residents from the coast. As a result, evacuations will not be fast and Haley asked residents to be patient and understand it could take several hours.

"You don't want to be caught in this,” Haley said. “If you don't get out in time, you might get stuck."

Lane reversals are planned from roads heading out of Charleston to start at 3 p.m. on Wednesday

Interstate 26 eastbound will be reversed, with traffic heading away from the cost until the intersection of I-26 and I-77 in Columbia. That means commuters in Columbia will not be able to travel I-26 eastbound out of Columbia. However, interstates will be functioning normally northwest of Columbia.

Haley called on Midlands residents to understand that traffic will snarl as coastal-area residents head inland.

Haley said she called for a state of emergency in South Carolina at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Governor Haley and state emergency officials plan to reassess their evacuation plan Wednesday morning.

The powerful category 4 storm made landfall in Haiti Tuesday and could hit South Carolina’s coast Saturday.

County offices in those areas will also be closed.

I hate to say this but an evacuation this far in advance will be a looter’s paradise. I hope the police are out in force to stop the predators.

No republican governor better hug Obama this time like in ‘08, although in the case of Haley she’s probably soul kiss him.

Overkill to look good for the MSM is my impression.

They also don’t want to look like Katrina but if the states allow FEMA to dictate like they did after Katrina, they show their weakness.

I’m temporarily without sound on my puter but it’s a cool looking house. Is it supposed to be hurricane proof?

Just got off the phone with an old college friend who lives in Monck’s Corner, thirty miles from the coast ... will be spending a few day with me in E TN given the governor’s warning to evacuate. Last big storm their power was out for a week! Water will be a major headache, too. Nobody will be driving around in the mess.

Honestly let them take it. The house might not be there anyway when you get back. Not worth worrying about things. As long as you have adequate insurance, who cares. Lives worth way more then anything else.

Last time they did an evacuation of that area for a storm (12 years ago, or so) it was a total CF. No gas at gas stations, no food at restaurants, No motel rooms available any closer than Tenn.

Tell a million folks to jump in their cars, where are they supposed to go?

And the roads away from the coast became parking lots. Might take more than a tank of gas to go 100 miles.

Yes! It’s an amazing house, super sturdy, and even rather energy efficient. There are a handful of really interesting videos on Youtube about dome homes and structures. I would buy one in a heartbeat (or have one built). They’re often more expensive at first, but they have almost no maintenance costs - except for repainting the exterior every few years if you have it painted to begin with. The video I linked to, if I recall correctly, that particular home can withstand winds of 150 mph with ease.
