Mandeville Police arrested an Abita Springs woman Wednesday (March 25) who allegedly tried to hide her impregnation through an extramarital affair by crying rape. Gina Louise Causey, 40, was charged with criminal mischief, police said. Causey showed up with her husband at police headquarters Tuesday, spinning a tale of being raped at gunpoint in December 2014 near the Mandeville lakefront, police said. In an interview with detectives, Causey also said the alleged perpetrator was a law enforcement officer who had raped several other women in the area and had now impregnated her. Her tale was an extravagant one - "like...

If a white cop had shot and killed that 14-year-old kid in Houma last Tuesday, there's a good chance Houma would be a household word. The town dodged a racial bullet. Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's deputies responded in force to reports armed "men" had entered an abandoned house. Houma is not some sprawling, crime-riddled metropolis; chances are good everyone knew or could see the house was abandoned. It wasn't quite 6 p.m. - plenty of light left. Cameron Tillman, a black 14-year-old freshman at Ellender Memorial High School answered the door when the cops knocked. He was shot and killed. Initial...

HOUMA -- A 21-year-old man left in charge of four young children Saturday night is accused of smothering a 14-month-old to death because the child would not go to sleep. Preston Morris, 142 Gladys St., a live-in baby sitter for the child and his three sisters was at their home in Coteau near La. 182 Saturday night while their parents went out, said Terrebonne Sheriff Jerry Larpenter. Morris called 9-1-1 just before 10 p.m. and told emergency workers that he’d found Christian Boudreaux, the youngest of the children, unresponsive in his crib. By the time a medical team and investigators...

The man who allegedly admitted to murdering nearly two dozen men told authorities he did so to keep them quiet after raping them. p> HOUMA -- The FBI temporarily shut down and raided a handful of local convenience stores Thursday, leading Arab store owners to decry the search-and-seizure operations as racial profiling. The government agents targeted clothing and smoking materials during their searches, store owners said, but authorities did not reveal the reasons for the searches or whether any arrests were made by late Thursday afternoon.

HOUMA -- During the information vacuum following Hurricane Katrina, locals made scores of frantic calls to area newspapers and police to report the unimaginable: Evacuees from New Orleans were being stripped of loaded guns at a Houma shelter. Roving gangs from the inner city were patrolling local neighborhoods. A woman was carjacked at the mall. From the shocking to the unbelievable, none of the anonymous rumors called in to police and other agencies over the past two weeks were true. In fact, police report overall crime in Terrebonne Parish has dropped 40 percent since the hurricane made landfall, forcing thousands...

Houma, La. – The Salvation Army of Houma, La., has been providing three meals a day to refugees seeking shelter at the Houma Civic Center, but without the local citizens, it would not have been possible. They began arriving the day after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. “The Salvation Army assisted approximately 450 people seeking shelter from New Orleans,” said Liz Daigneault, Service Center Director for The Salvation Army. “We had no food, no ice, no water.” She put out a plea to the local media and received the items needed to provide meals to those seeking shelter. “I was...
