DEKALB, TX (KSLA) - Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moo: A DeKalb, TX cow has managed the extremely rare feat of giving birth to 4 live calves. The black calves, 3 bulls and a heifer, were born to the cow owned by Dora Rumsey-Barling and her husband, Jimmy. The cow, described by Dora as "just a run of the mill red cow," had been bred to an Angus bull, so all 4 of the calves are black. “We didn't think she was due, even for one calf,” Dora says. Buzzards spotted circling over their 100-acre property in the Hubbard community south of...
  • Police, Doctors Warn Against New Synthetic Drug "Flakka"

    03/20/2015 1:23:14 PM PDT · by nickcarraway · 24 replies
Law enforcement officials and medical personnel are warning people about the risks of a dangerous new synthetic drug that is growing in popularity in the streets of South Florida. Just last month, a man was caught on surveillance camera attempting to kick in the hurricane glass doors of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department headquarters. It was later determined that that man, 50-year-old James West, was high off of Flakka, a synthetic street drug mix with a base of bath salts that can result in paranoia, anxiety, psychosis and hallucinations. According to police, West was hallucinating and believed that 25 cars...

This week, we have Savory, with Fruit! (Heads-up, pugmama!) I've never been a very fancy cook, though I do enjoy making food pretty and presentable and will go to some lengths for that. Otherwise, I'm into 'comfort' foods. But I greatly enjoy having something very different and unusual from time to time; and some of my favorites have been dishes that are savory, but include a sweet element, usually fruit. I once vacationed with friends who came from a restaurant background, and eating with them was always a great experience - always something unexpected and never before encountered. About 25...

  • So I just bought a Mosin Nagant

This morning I bought a surplus 1942 Mosin Nagant Russian made Sniper Rifle. The purchase included a double leather pouch with a weird device for oiling the rifle, a cloth ammo pouch that attaches to the butt stock (stashed in the double leather pouch), a bag of assorted metal pieces (I assume tools) and a bayonet. The seller had inspected the rifle and removed some of the cosmoline (there's still a LOT left) and made sure it was in good working order. I downloaded a manual and I'll break it down, clean it and oil it as soon as I...
  • Texas Lawmakers Make Musician Phil Collins An Honorary Texan (for donation of Alamo artifacts)

State lawmakers have named pop star Phil Collins an honorary Texan, saluting his donation of hundreds of Alamo artifacts back to the historic outpost – while offering numerous quips referencing his song lyrics. ...Last year, he gave 200-plus pieces of his collection to the Alamo. Collins grinned as many lawmakers took to the floor to joke about “feeling it in the air tonight,” ‘‘one more night” and Texas having a “groovy kind of love” for its newest honorary citizen.
  • Cambridge Consultants reveal world’s first all-digital radio transmitter

The world’s first fully digital radio transmitter has been developed by Cambridge Consultants, paving the way for 5G high-speed broadband for mobile devices. Unlike software-defined radio (SDR), the breakthrough – named Pizzicato – is not a mixture of analogue and digital components but is completely digital, which can enable new ways of using the radio spectrum intelligently. When transmitting data, only low frequency signals of 1GHz or lower propagate well over distance or through walls, so they are in great demand. Expanding to make use of frequencies of 10GHz and beyond will require techniques such as meshing and beamforming...

Gazpacho: Drink your Salad! This is one of my husband's favorites of the things that I make routinely. I first learned the recipe when one of my Virginia cousins served it as an appetizer at a Christmas party. I was surprised to learn that it is an old Virginia favorite, found in many old cookbooks and served at Williamsburg restaurants. I've never made it in the authentic Spanish fashion, with bread; but here's a link to a somewhat different recipe that does: http://www.history.org/almanack/life/food/fdgzpcho.cfm When I can't get good tomatoes for this, I use a can of tomatoes for the part...

I just finished following the thread highlighting the Chevy small-block history. My wife and I recently went to the Good Guys show in Pleasanton CA. There were lots of BEAUTIFUL cars there. I think that every '69 Camero ever made was there. Every one more beautiful than the last. But, we noticed that everyone there was our age. Less than "older than dirt" but able to remember Vietnam. I wondered what will happen in the next 20 years when we are all gone. Will cars of the 50's, 60's, 70's be a thing of the past? (I stopped counting at...
  • The FBI and NSA Hate Apple’s Plan to Keep Your iPhone6 Data Secret (via encryption)(Sept. 2014)

    /time.com ^ | Sept. 27, 2014 | Sam_Frizell
Apple released iPhone 6 with new, powerful encryption setting that should make it much harder for law enforcement and surveillance groups like the FBI and the NSA from accessing users’ emails, photos and contacts. After Edward Snowden revelations last year, privacy-minded users may be happy about the new feature, but law enforcement is decidedly not. At a news conference Thursday, FBI Director James Comey criticized Apple’s encryption, which scrambles information on the new iPhone 6 using a code that could take “more than five-and-a-half years to try all combinations of a six-character alphanumeric passcode with lowercase letters and numbers,” Comey...

  • Do Bushmaster AR-15s/M4s accept polymer magazines?

    03/07/2015 6:44:30 PM PST · by eater-of-toast · 23 replies
As a .308 guy, and an M-1A and FAL owner, I've never purchased an AR-15 or semiauto M4, but think I'm about to give in. One feature I want is the ability to use polymer magazines, eg the Israeli orlite 30-rounders. I remember it used to be the case that Bushmasters would only feed the first round from a polymer magazines properly. Has Bushmaster rectified this, or no? I want an AR-15 or M4 that'll feed consistently from any aftermarket magazine. I don't wish to be restricted to the gunmaker's propriety magazines, or to aluminum magazines only (which, unless I'm...

Black Eye Peas - and Cilantro! When I was growing up, we always had black-eye peas on New Year's Day, a tradition from my Southern Granny. But we had them throughout the year as well, and I grew to like them very much. I found this Sara Moulton recipe for Black-Eye Pea Cakes with Salsa Mayonnaise many years ago, and it's become a favorite. I think it was my first introduction to cilantro; they say one either loves or hates cilantro, and I'm one of the lovers. Sometimes, if I don't want the mess of frying, I make these a...

The last time Ford made a GT, it built more than 4,000 of them and sold each one for around $150,000. Judging by the premiums at which they later traded, they were evidently worth a lot more than that. But this time, the new Ford GT will be far more expensive and far more scarce. Official performance, production and pricing figures have yet to be released, but upon the new American supercar's European debut in Geneva, Ford performance chief Dave Pericak indicated it would be priced competitively with the Lamborghini Aventador – which carries a base sticker price approaching $400,000,...
