`Twas the night before Christmas, cold, dark and foreboding, As I sat at the work bench, quite busy reloading. The empties from autumn were polished so clear For primers and powder, and bullets from Speer And Hornady's soft-points, and Nosler's Partitions (MY bench ain't no place for brand name omissions!) All sat in their boxes, right next to the press With dies from Pacific, and RCBS When all of a sudden there came such a jolt, I grabbed for my Mossberg, and whipped out my Colt. As I spilled Hodgdon's powder all over the shelf I scrambled for cover, just...

Maker's 46 bourbon, from the Maker's Mark people, finally hit the local market. Not earth shaking news, I know, but if anyone is a fan of good bourbon this has to be on the list. It's 94 proof but sips like half that, neat, and at room temperature. And, no, I don't have any financial interest, just wanted to share some good news with my buds.

A teenager who was bullied by online trolls posted a heartbreaking video on YouTube before killing himself, an inquest heard. Adam Smith, 19, who had learning difficulties, was bombarded with spiteful remarks and accused of plagiarism over a short story he put on a website. In response to the vicious bullying, he posted a video on YouTube entitled ‘I’m sorry’ where he apologised for any misunderstanding. But he was lambasted again by cruel users, who mocked him saying his speech problems were so bad it made them laugh. Days later he was seen crying as he walked to a railway...

Heads up: there are fake Nikon D800E DSLRs floating around. That’s according to Nikon Europe, which posted a notice “regarding fraudulent Nikon D800E digital SLR.” Apparently some unscrupulous folk are taking the D800, replacing its outer shell with the D800E cover, and selling the fake cameras through online auction sites (presumably eBay).

The world’s largest brick? Photo: Trucktrend In addition to Apple devices, noted security expert and The Mac Hacker’s Handbook co-author Charlie Miller has carried out some fascinating (and potentially terrifying) research into hacking vehicles. Last year, alongside fellow hacker Chris Valasek, Miller demonstrated that it is possible to hijack the steering and brakes of a Ford Escape and Toyota Prius using only a laptop connected to the car. Having done that, he has now moved onto exploring vulnerabilities in other vehicles — including his new 2014 Cherokee jeep. All that research comes at a high price, however, since Miller recently...

During my years of lurking, I always enjoyed the Thanksgiving Cooking thread; but I missed most of it this year. I've got a ? for the Freepers who like to cook and entertain: What do you take to an office party, where the only warm-up options are microwave and sterno-steam-tray? My crew favors my chicken and dumplings, which work out very well warmed up in a crock pot. But I've done it for years, and it's a little labor-intensive for me this year. I want to do something different, and my other best dishes are 'crusty' things - chicken pot...

"This thundering thing is the Beast of Turin. The Fiat S76 land speed record car. It's a behemoth, nearly as tall as a man, with a four-cylinder engine displacing a staggering 28.5 liters. In 1911 that massive engine propelled the Fiat S76 to 135-mph, an extraordinary accomplishment at the time,..... .....

Every day for the last decade, artist Ra Paulette has hiked alone into the sandstone mesas in northern New Mexico with a wheelbarrow and a backpack filled with tools. He heads to the sandstone caves and walks inside. But instead of being greeted with darkness, Paulette's caves are luminous places where the sunlight pours in thanks to carefully designed and excavated light tunnels, carved by Paulette himself.

Summary: Yes, you still can trick Microsoft into giving you security updates for Windows XP. No, it's not a good idea. You are not protected. Perhaps the most popular story I've written for ZDNet was the one explaining how you can hack the registry in Windows XP and trick Windows Update into continuing to send you security updates. The basis of it is that Microsoft has an embedded variant of Windows XP and support doesn't end on that until April 2016. The hack makes XP look like the embedded version. I have maintained a Hyper-V VM on a Windows 8.1...

The National Rifle Association is promising supporters it will carry on the fight against Initiative 594, using its “philosophically supportive majority” in the Washington Legislature when it convenes in January. “We are already discussing legislative remedies to the most onerous provisions,” the NRA said in a letter to supporters. The Gun Lobby’s big gun defends the effort it made in opposing I-594, which requires criminal background checks for those purchasing firearms at gun shows and over the Internet. It blames billionaires the measure’s landslide passage. “Please bear in mind that, in our fight to defeat I-594, NRA faced unprecedented spending...
