Would you vote for a law that makes criminals of many neighbors, relatives and friends? Initiative 594 would do exactly that. #In their zeal to impose “universal background checks,” the creators of I-594 have written a law that would require nearly all “transfers” of firearms to be conducted at the premises of a Federal Firearms License dealer.

Former Clinton White House Deputy Director Fred DuVal (D) is running for governor of Arizona, and if he wins, he will put his support behind the implementation of Colorado-like gun control. In March 2013, Colorado's legislature passed new measures barring private gun sales in the state. The measures require a law-abiding citizen who sells a gun to another law-abiding citizen to do so in the presence of a Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder, which demands a background check. The measures also place a new fee on the sale of the firearm to cover the cost of that background check.

Over at the Constitution Society, author J. Neil Schulman conducted a remarkable exercise. He sent the text of the Second Amendment not to a lawyer but to an expert on the English Language: Roy Copperud taught Journalism at USC for 17 years and served on the usage panel of the American Heritage Dictionary. Mirriam Webster’s dictionary frequently cites him as an expert on American English usage. Copperud: The right is not granted by the amendment; its existence is assumed. The thrust of the sentence is that the right shall be preserved inviolate for the sake of ensuring a militia.” Shulman:...

Within hours of the mass killing Friday at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Washington State, a number of gun control groups and lawmakers were quick to make statements calling for action including increased regulation. Some of these national groups, such as Everytown for Gun Safety, have invested heavily to the tune of nearly $2 million into a ballot initiative in the state, I-594, to expand background checks to include almost all gun sales. Everytown was joined in its call to action by the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility (WAGR), the direct sponsor of the measure. To those voices were added members...

It didn’t take long for some progressives to exploit the tragic shooting at a Washington State high school last Friday, as they used it in an attempt to gain support for a ballot initiative requiring expanded background checks on all gun transfers in the state. Within hours of the Oct. 24 shooting that claimed the lives of two students at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, one of the billionaire backers of the Nov. 4 ballot initiative posted a link to the story on his Facebook page with the caption, “We need more school shootings!!! Vote yes on Initiative 591.” Facebook post by...

Model and TV personality Chrissy Teigen is usually one of Twitter's more resilient members. But after getting lost in a "sea of hate and anger" on the platform, Teigen has tapped out. The 28-year-old turned into a Twitter all-star after she joined in 2009, thanks to her irreverent sense of humor, prolific use and ability to tweet about pretty much anything. But after getting a vitriolic response to her comments regarding the October 22 shootings in Ottawa, Ontario, Teigen posted that she's quitting Twitter for the (presumably) safer pastures of Instagram. Here's what started it all: On Wednesday, as the...

There is no single change or law that will eliminate every act of gun violence, but there are proven, common sense measures we can take to protect our families and make our communities safer. For example, here in Oregon, we don't require criminal background checks for all gun sales like those that happen online. Dangerous and/or violent convicted criminals easily exploit this loophole to buy guns from strangers online — anonymously, and with no questions asked.

One thing the NRA agrees with on Everytown, however, is that I-594, while a state initiative, is a pivotal battle that could decide the course of the war over gun control versus gun rights in the nation. “If this is successful in Washington State we can expect to see a cut-and-paste job in other states all over the country where they will try to replicate this,” Mortensen said.

A leading firearms expert and criminal defence lawyer says he would have been “shocked beyond words” to learn that Ottawa shooting suspect Michael Zehaf Bibeau had obtained his gun legally in Canada. Solomon Friedman, who was locked in his downtown office for much of the day Wednesday as Ottawa police attempted to secure Parliament Hill and the surrounding buildings, says several layers of safeguards are in place to ensure that a person like Zehaf Bibeau does not have legal access to firearms. The former Quebecer, who shot and killed a reservist guarding the National War Memorial before moving up to...

O'Donnell raved, "I thought it was brilliant."

As millionaires and billionaires continue to push universal background checks and handgun registration in Washington state, their donations for Initiative 594 (I-594) have reached "nearly $9.5 million."

I-594 has been cleverly drafted to sound like it merely makes small changes to gun laws, not a flat-out ban or gun registration scheme. This is why it is so dangerous. People are less likely to oppose it; in fact, polls show that even a majority of gun owners - 54 percent of the 35 percent of Washington residents who own a gun - are in favor of it.
