Gun control did not become politically acceptable until the Gun Control Act of 1968 signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The law's primary focus was to regulate commerce in firearms by prohibiting interstate firearms transfers except among licensed manufacturers, dealers and importers. SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- People gave up 271 guns during a weapons buyback in San Francisco Saturday. The buyback was held on Howard Street in the South of Market Area when police showed off this military-grade bazooka. Officers also collected handguns, shotguns, and high-powered rifles. Religious leaders are partnering with law enforcement groups for a gun buyback program Friday across the city. Acting U.S. Attorney William Fitzpatrick and state Attorney General Christopher Porrino will announce several initiatives to combat gun violence in New Jersey, including a two-day statewide gun buyback program in three cities this summer. A formal announcement is expected at 1 p.m. in Trenton, but the gun buyback initiative being planned would include locations in Newark, Camden and Trenton, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office.
