N.J. to announce 2-day, statewide gun buyback program

Acting U.S. Attorney William Fitzpatrick and state Attorney General Christopher Porrino will announce several initiatives to combat gun violence in New Jersey, including a two-day statewide gun buyback program in three cities this summer.
A formal announcement is expected at 1 p.m. in Trenton, but the gun buyback initiative being planned would include locations in Newark, Camden and Trenton, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office.
The joint federal and state announcement comes after a deadly start to the summer. The amount of money made available for buybacks was not disclosed ahead of the annoucement.

So, will this be one of those "buy backs" where some enterprising folks could make a buck or is that forbidden in Joisee. But, uh, how can someone buy back something that was never theirs in the first place. Interesting last paragraph in the piece too.

I hate dishonesty. The very term "buy back" is dishonest. The State of New Jersey did not manufacture, ship, or sell these weapons in the first place. It cannot possibly buy them "back".

If it's a typical buy back they'll get piles of hunting and plinking rifles that were stolen in the 1950s and 1960s, a few broken handguns, and a very small number of nice, contemporary pistols. (Be sure to check the ballistics on the latter! Cash + "No questions asked" is a great way to dispose of a firearm that has been previously used in a crime!)
This is all nothing more than a stupid, futile gesture. Pennsylvania, which is one of the more 2A friendly states around, is on the other side of the Delaware River from Camden and Trenton and it is much, much, much easier to get a Pennsylvania driver's license than to get a New Jersey pistol purchase permit.
