The US House of Representatives on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly in favor of the bipartisan Antisemitism Awareness Act, CNN reported. The bill would mandate that when the Department of Education enforces federal anti-discrimination laws it uses a definition of antisemitism put forward by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. The House vote was 320 to 91 with 70 Democrats and 21 Republicans voting against the bill. The GOP opposition largely came from the right flank of the conference. The bill would next need to be taken up by the Senate. New York Republican Mike Lawler, who introduced the legislation, said in a...

What was supposed to be a red tsunami last week turned out to be a ripple. It didn’t take long for the GOP establishment to place the blame: Donald Trump! It couldn’t be because Mitch McConnell decided to spend $10 million supporting the treacherous Lisa Murkowski against the state’s GOP nominee, rather than in Arizona, Georgia, or Michigan. No, it was Trump. It wasn’t Kevin McCarthy’s embarrassing attempt to recreate Newt Gingrich’s successful “Contract with America” that galvanized America and brought the GOP 54 seats in a year with 2.99% inflation, with his facile “Commitment to America”. No, it was...
  • GOP blocks Rand Paul’s bid to defund Planned Parenthood

Republican leaders in the Senate stepped in Wednesday to block Sen. Rand Paul’s latest effort to defund Planned Parenthood, an issue popular with the GOP base that some say could help energize voters for the midterm elections. The Kentucky senator late last week signaled that he would offer an amendment to the appropriations bill funding the departments of Labor and Health and Human Services, the relevant legislative vehicle for the Planned Parenthood funding ban. Supporters said that it would need just a majority to win. Late Wednesday, Paul moved to add his amendment to an opening on a so-called “amendment...

Most of the public, 59 percent, say they will vote or consider voting for President Obama in 2012, despite 57 percent of people saying they disapprove of the way he’s handled the economy, according to the latest POLITICO-George Washington University Battleground Poll. Here are some highlights from the poll, published Monday: • Obama gets a 52 percent job approval rating, up 7 percent since the last poll, in October. • 57 percent of people disapprove of Obama's handling of the economy; 42 percent approve. • 59 percent say they will vote for him or consider voting for him in 2012;...

House Republicans are not shifting to the political right, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) told CNSNews.com on Wednesday, just hours after two of the top three GOP leadership spots were won by conservative lawmakers in an internal leadership election. Members Reps. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Mike Pence (R-Ind.), and John Mica (R-Fla.), however, told CNSNews.com that they think the conference is shifting to the political right. But Boehner said, “No, I don’t think it’s right or left. It’s what are the issues Americans are concerned about, and how do we build solutions on our principles? It’s not left or right....

bill introduced to the US House of Representatives would require ISPs to record all users' surfing activity, IM conversations and email traffic indefinitely. The bill, dubbed the Safety Act by sponsor Lamar Smith, a republican congressman from Texas, would impose fines and a prison term of one year on ISPs which failed to keep full records....

This election is it. I am giving the Republicans one last chance to get it right and make up for lost time and abandoned ideals. In 1994, the congress became Republican for the first time since Dwight Eisenhower was president. The Contract With America was a truly innovative gutsy policy that resonated with the American people and provided hope that our government could be reformed and brought under control and that spendng could be reduced. Now fast forward 12 years. It is obvious that the Republicans have absolutely no intention of cutting spending, reducing taxes, stemming the tide of useless...
