Boehner Says House GOP Not Shifting to the Right; Other Leaders Disagree
CNSNEWS ^ | Nov 20th, 2008 | Josiah Ryan

House Republicans are not shifting to the political right, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) told CNSNews.com on Wednesday, just hours after two of the top three GOP leadership spots were won by conservative lawmakers in an internal leadership election.

Members Reps. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Mike Pence (R-Ind.), and John Mica (R-Fla.), however, told CNSNews.com that they think the conference is shifting to the political right.

But Boehner said, “No, I don’t think it’s right or left. It’s what are the issues Americans are concerned about, and how do we build solutions on our principles? It’s not left or right.

“That’s minimizing and marginalizing the situation,” Boehner told

I know with Boehner still the House GOP leader, the GOP is looking at more losses in 2010. When the coach gets two losses in a row, he's fired! Why is Boehner is still on the job?

And because the Repubs refuse to move to the right, they will never take control of the House again. Instead, a 3rd party will rise in dominance with conservative values like low taxes, less govt, follow the constitution replacing the traditional Repub Party.

Call Boehner’s office and get a clarification. The drive bys are so full of Obama and always writing whatever they want. This could be some kind of mis-quote and typical.

CNBC is a pile.

I think people need to relax a bit. The left/right thing is over played in my opinion. Make the pitch that the party is returning to principles of limited government, fiscal responsibility, free markets, protecting the Constitution, etc.

If they take that tack then people should get what it means.

Sounds to me like he’s a smart politician. A significant part of the reason Obama got elected is that he convinced the majority of voters that he transcends old-style, partisan politics. Yes, I know that he fooled them and lied through his teeth. But fool them he did. Boehner leads on conservative issues for the most part. Let him call it what he will—and staying away from partisan labels is smart in this climate—as long as he provides the leadership we need on conservative issues.

UMM...Boehner is saying the same thing Pelosi and Reid said when they were made leaders. Pelosi and Reid redefined left and right. Although they were far left they defined themselves as center.

Boehner’s statement is clear: the new leaders are center.

Get it?

I think you have it. We are pro Constitution and anti socialist; we are pro common sense and we are pro anti fringe; and we are liberty and anti tyranny and anarchy.

The Constitution is a document of common sense pro liberty ideas. It's content should not be labeled as wing-like.

Well if they aren’t moving to the right, they won’t be moving to anywhere near a majority in the future.

I think Boehner is just redefining the terms. The Pro Freedom and pro Constitution positions are common sense, center-of-thought positions.

It's the big government types who are left wing and it is the RINO types who are half way to the left. The principle of unalienable rights is NOT fringe.

On top of this, we now get another 6 years of McCain and watching him become that 60th Senate vote that gives the Democrats Cloture. Especially on Gorebull Warming and throwing the doors wide open at the borders.

This is going to get extremely ugly before the economy makes it’s own correction.

I don’t think Boehner is trying to stab conservatives in the back (not more than usual). He’s just trying to undercut the MSM theme that the GOP is becoming even more right-wing, extreme, radical, blah, blah,.

Remember folks, Boehner was one of the leaders behind the House GOP efforts to stay and work on drilling/energy issues after Pelosi turned off the lights and mandated that everyone go home for the August break. He certainly was not showing any weakness then-—just standing his ground and addressing the issues instead of falling for the delay tactics of the Dems.
