It took Abigail Bautista less than a month of living in Langley Park to learn that her new neighborhood in Maryland had its own set of laws, written not in statutes but in gang graffiti and blood. The Guatemalan mother of five was pushing a cart of merchandise along University Boulevard one winter morning in late 2012 when three young men approached. “Do you know who we are?” one asked her in Spanish. Bautista shook her head. “We are La Mara Salvatrucha,” he said. “And here, there are rules.”

Instead of asking the U.S. President Donald Trump for assistance with Chicago’s never-ending gun violence, Cook County commissioner Richard Boykin, a Democrat, has reportedly expressed interest in teaming up with the United Nations. “I’m hoping to appeal to the U.N. to actually come to Chicago and meet with victims of violence, and maybe even possibly help out in terms of peacekeeping efforts, because I think it’s so critical for us to make sure that these neighborhoods are safe,” he said Thursday, according to local station WBBM. He reportedly made the comments from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport en route to New...

Brittany Covington narrated a Facebook Live video showing the special needs teen being tortured and humiliated in the Chicago apartment she shared with her sister Tanishia, who is still behind bars in this matter along with co-defendants Tesfaye Cooper and Jordan Hill.

But, the juror said the final split on all three charges was in favor of a not guilty decision. Angel Soler's mother brought him to the U.S. as a young boy, figuring things would surely be better than in Honduras, where he had lived in one of the world's most violent cities. Javier Castillo's father made the same calculation when he took his young son out of gang-plagued El Salvador. Life in the leafy Long Island suburbs of New York didn't prove to be any safer.

MSNBC. MS-13. Same struggle? In an amusing stumble on her MSNBC show this morning, Joy Reid momentarily seemed to confuse her own network with the notorious MS-13 criminal gang. Claiming that Virginia Republican candidate Ed Gillespie is running as a “neo-Confederate,” Reid said that he is using racial scare ads, “where he’s saying brown people are coming to kill you, because they’re all in MSN –" Reid seemed about to say “MSNBC,” before catching herself: “MS-13.” Get the rest of the story and view the video here.

There were warnings Friday about a possible upsurge in knockout attacks in which people are sucker punched for no good reason. Video of one such incident shows a woman being suddenly kicked and then punched by a man. She was knocked out cold on the ground, but rather than help her several people took out phones to take pictures. Nobody called the police. It happened in Pittsburgh more than a month ago, and something similar happened in Brooklyn on Thursday night. “As he went to tie up his dogs to confront these kids, the group distracted him from the front...

RICHMOND — Former president Barack Obama took the unusual step of criticizing and mocking Virginia’s Republican gubernatorial candidate for a controversial ad blitz highlighting Latino gang violence. As he rallied for the Democratic candidate Ralph Northam on Thursday night, Obama mentioned that he and his wife, Michelle Obama, have seen Republican Ed Gillespie’s commercials airing on television in their D.C. home. The spots say Northam is “weak on MS-13” as images of tattooed Latino men and the gang motto “Kill, Rape, Control” pop up on the screen.

A Twin Peaks defendant is seeking to disqualify the McLennan County District Attorney's Office from prosecuting his case, claiming prosecutors engaged in "illegal and outrageous" conduct by releasing images of the biker and his wife having sex as part of the massive Twin Peaks discovery process.
