Nineteen years ago, a small group of Canadian FReepers set out on a journey to provide Canada with the same sort of political outlet that our American friends have with Free Republic. We started a Canada Chapter on this site, which we quickly outgrew. Then, we moved to our own site, and called it Free Dominion. Out of gratitude to Jim Robinson, and our friends on FR, we provided a backup forum for FReepers for when FR experienced technical problems. And, many Free Republic members registered, and regularly logged in to say hi! Several FR stalwarts, like coteblanche, backhoe and...

<p>Feeling maligned by the media, Donald Trump is threatening to weaken First Amendment protections for reporters if he were president and make it easier for him to sue them.</p>
<p>"I love free press. I think it's great," he said Saturday on Fox News Channel, before quickly adding, "We ought to open up the libel laws, and I'm going to do that."</p>

Donald Trump said on Friday he plans to change libel laws in the United States so that he can have an easier time suing news organizations. During a rally in Fort Worth, Texas, Trump began his usual tirade against newspapers such as The New York Times and The Washington Post, saying they're "losing money" and are "dishonest." The Republican presidential candidate then took a different turn, suggesting that when he's president they'll "have problems." "One of the things I'm going to do if I win, and I hope we do and we're certainly leading. I'm going to open up our...

On Thursday, CEO Brendan Eich of Mozilla was forced out of his job thanks to his $1,000 donation to the Proposition 8 pro-traditional marriage effort in California in 2008. At that point, he held the exact same position as Barack Obama on traditional marriage. Now, that position has soured in the nostrils of the militant left, which seeks to ruin the lives of those with whom it disagrees. ~~snip~~ Google Adsense Shuts Down WorldNetDaily. On February 6, Google Adsense notified WorldNetDaily’s Joseph Farah that it would be cancelling WND’s account thanks to a “policy violation email this morning regarding negative/hate...

Free Dominion, one of the arch-foes of the Canadian Gun Registry, has been shut down. The conservative website, Free Dominion, has shut down after a long legal battle with censorship champion lawyer Richard Warman. Warman gained notoriety for his attacks on conservative sites by using the "hate speech" law in Canada (the Canadian Human Rights Commission) to censor speech he disagreed with. He was essentially the only person using the law and the process. The CHRC became his personal tool of repression. He had considerable success, though the CHRC has since been reformed by parliament as a result....

Conservative website shuttered after libel ruling Ottawa lawyer Richard Warman wins long-running legal battle By Andrew Duffy, OTTAWA CITIZEN January 28, 2014 OTTAWA — The online political forum, Free Dominion, has shut down after a wholesale defeat in a libel case brought by Ottawa human rights lawyer Richard Warman. A jury concluded that Warman was maliciously defamed by four commentators on Free Dominion, a website that bills itself as “the voice of principled conservatism.” Warman has been awarded more than $127,000 in general damages, aggravated damages, punitive damages and court costs because of 41 defamatory statements published on the conservative...

Today we took a beating from the jury who heard the case of Richard Warman v. Fourniers and John Does. Their decision was completely unexpected (at least by me) so now we must re-evaluate our position.

OTTAWA — An Ontario Superior Court judge has tossed out a defamation suit launched by an Ottawa blogger, Dr. Dawg, who claimed that an Internet chat room post damaged his reputation by calling him a Taliban supporter.

Ten years ago today saw the creation of what I consider perhaps the most important online web forum in Canada. January 6th, 2001 saw the launch of The Voice of Principled Conservatism - Free Dominion. At the time, our nation was mired in a seemingly endless reign of Jean Chretien's majority Liberal government. The national media gave us a choice between the far-left (CBC) and the slightly left (CTV) as far as news and political commentary. We were stuck in perpetual political correctness and left-wing dogma run amok. The internet was no different. For Canadians on the political right, places...

In a case with implications for online privacy and free expression, a panel of Ottawa judges is considering whether websites named in libel actions should be required to identify people who post anonymous defamatory comments. Their decision could chill whistleblowers and others who use pseudonyms to post controversial comments, say civil libertarians. And, they maintain, if the judges support unmasking anonymous posters, that could erode their privacy by allowing others to piece together vast amounts of personal information. The case arises from a 2007 defamation suit filed by Ottawa lawyer Richard Warman, who is reviled by the far right for...

Ann Coulter is currently on a speaking tour in Canada. She will be speaking in Ottawa on Tuesday and a far leftist official from the University of Ottawa has sent her a notice of pre-emptive censorship. There may be fireworks in Ottawa to great Ann. Full text of letter to Ann Coulter: “Dear Ms. Coulter, I understand that you have been invited by University of Ottawa Campus Conservatives to speak at the University of Ottawa this coming Tuesday. We are, of course, always delighted to welcome speakers on our campus and hope that they will contribute positively to the meaningful...

Canadian court orders release of forum data posted at 8:36 am on March 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey Send to a Friend | Share on Facebook | printer-friendly A judge has ordered Free Dominion, the Canadian counterpart to Free Republic, to release the records of its anonymous forum posters in order to enable a lawsuit by Richard Warman. The release will mean the end of anonymity for all practical purposes in Canada, as well as an end to privacy for Free Dominion itself, which must also produce all its hosting agreements and ownership information as well. The judge offered this...

FreeRepublic's Canadian sister site WWW.freedominion.com.pa is not working. Is anybody else getting through? Probably just a technical issue, but with a gov that is hostile to FD and the kangaroo court you always wonder.

A note to our readers Tuesday, 10 June 2008 Now that the first show trial is behind us, SteynOnline is going on hiatus for a while. I have to do some far-flung traveling in connection with a forthcoming project that would have been coming forth a whole lot sooner were it not for these thought-police investigations. Thanks to everyone who's swung by these parts to read a column, enter a competition, buy a book or drop a missive to Mark's Mailbox, and in so doing helped make this last year our most successful yet. I'm especially grateful to all those...

Note to American readers: Here's what Canadians have to put up with. Covet your freedom of speech - it's rare, even in the so-called 'free world'. That self-serving legal maladroit Richard Warman is making waves again with his so-called Maximum Disruption Campaign. The latest has the anti-rightwing, anti-conservative, anti-freedom of speech legal beagle launching an all-out attack against a number of conservative writers and internet forums.

OTTAWA, April 1, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Richard Warman, a homosexual activist who has worked with the homosexual activist group EGALE, has been caught having written a racist screed against one of his most prominent enemies - the Canadian Senator best known for fighting against homosexual 'marriage' - Anne Cools. Of course Warman claims he was simply posing as a racist in writing his post in order to goad self proclaimed white supremacist Marc Lemire into incriminating himself. However, famed conservative columnist Mark Steyn points out in one of his latest writings on the debacle at the Canadian Human Rights...
