The Houston Texans’ new wide receiver, Kenny Stills, took a knee during the national anthem before his first game playing for the team on Monday. In footage captured of the moment, Stills could be seen kneeling while “The Star Spangled Banner” played ahead of the team’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. The move comes roughly a week after the athlete was traded to the team from the Miami Dolphins.

Philadelphia 76ers forward Mike Scott got into a fight with Eagles fans at Sunday's game against the visiting Washington Redskins after allegedly receiving racial taunts from tailgaters. A video was posted before Sunday's kickoff showing a person, apparently Scott, in a fight with Eagles fans outside the stadium. He did not appear to get hurt, and fans tweeted afterward that Scott took selfies with them. According to PhillyVoice, which interviewed around a dozen witnesses and reviewed video evidence, the incident began with playful ribbing, but turned ugly when some individuals directed racial slurs, including the n-word, at Scott.

More than 16,000 shirts have already been ordered through the VolShop, according to ESPN, and part of the proceeds will be donated to STOMP Out Bullying — a nonprofit organization that helps fight bullying nationwide.

The SEC announced Monday that Alabama’s Sept. 21 home game against Southern Mississippi will kickoff at 11 a.m. local time. The school is not happy about it. The school is so displeased with the news that president Stuart R. Bell and athletic director Greg Byrne released a statement to express the Tide’s position on the matter. “We are disappointed that our game against Southern Miss has been selected as a daytime kickoff at home,” the statement said. “We realize we’ve played more non-conference day games at home in September than any other SEC team since 2014. There have been a...

Losing 59-10 at any level of football leaves a mark. In Miami, it’s sparking a mutiny. Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, multiple Dolphins players contacted their agents after Sunday’s season-opening blowout loss and directed them to attempt to engineer trades elsewhere. The players believe that the coaching staff, despite claiming that they intend to try to win, aren’t serious about competing and winning and by all appearances have bought into the notion that the Dolphins will take their lumps now in the hopes of laying the foundation via high draft picks for building a successful team...

Odell Beckham Jr. wore a watch on his left wrist in his first game as a Cleveland Brown. Not just any watch — a Richard Mille that will run you a few hundred grand retail. He stated he has no fear of it breaking amidst the on-field violence of the NFL. "It's indestructible," Beckham Jr. said. The watch looked really nice. So there's that. It is certainly more than anyone can say about the Browns, who got humiliated 43-13 by the Tennessee Titans in their ballyhooed season opener as a supposed Super Bowl contender.

Lamar Jackson tied a franchise record with five touchdown passes as his Baltimore Ravens routed the host Miami Dolphins 59-10 in Sunday’s season opener for both teams. ....Several Miami mistakes led to Baltimore’s first-half assault, including a Fitzpatrick interception and a fumbled punt return by Jakeem Grant. In addition, the Ravens — leading 35-10 at the time — faked a punt with a direct snap to safety Anthony Levine, who rumbled 60 yards on a fourth-and-1 play for a first down to Miami’s 10 late in the second quarter.

Ten takeaways from a dramatic and occasionally mystifying Saturday in college football: 1. We welcome LSU into the 21st Century of offensive football. The most consistently underwhelming offense in the elite echelon of the sport has roared to life in 2019, just a decade or two behind most of the aerial revolution. It has been the biggest thing preventing the program from competing for a national title since 2011, when it made the BCS Championship Game. But after beating Texas 45-38, the Tigers have announced their arrival as a modern football power.

We know a little more about the dust-up between Antonio Brown and Oakland Raiders general manager Mike Mayock and, not surprisingly, the details aren’t pretty. Brown saw Mayock, who sent Brown a letter informing him he’d be fined for missing a workout before the Raiders’ preseason game in Canada, watching practice on Wednesday. So during practice he initiated an argument with Mayock, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson. During that argument, he called Mayock a “cracker,” Anderson reported. A day later the Raiders leaked a report that they were considering suspending Brown, who wasn’t at practice Thursday. The Raiders listed him...

  • Daniel Snyder dreamed of owning the Redskins. Two decades in, success remains elusive.

As a boy attending Washington Redskins games with his family at RFK Stadium, a short distance from his home in Maryland’s Montgomery County, Dan Snyder would gaze across the field and peer into the owner’s box. Other kids daydreamed about playing on an NFL field. Snyder envisioned himself lording over one. “I’d just watch,” Snyder once said, “and imagine what was happening in there.” Since 1999, when he was 34 years old, Daniel M. Snyder has watched the Washington Redskins from the seat of power he once fantasized about. The desired trappings of NFL ownership have remained elusive, barely any...

There’s nothing more fun than overreacting after the first week of a football season. Let’s have some fun. Some of the teams in our preseason top 25 had games that are ripe for overreactions that will be seen and heard on social media and talk media shows. So we’re going to try to get out in front of the craziness. Below are some of the overreactions you may come across over the next few days accompanied by a needed dose of reality. After all, there are still 13 weeks to go in the regular season.
