Just days after a young student in Florida was bullied for wearing his homemade Tennessee T-shirt to school, the university has debuted his design on an official shirt — and Vols fans are loving it. More than 16,000 shirts have already been ordered through the VolShop, according to ESPN, and part of the proceeds will be donated to STOMP Out Bullying — a nonprofit organization that helps fight bullying nationwide.

Yeah I’m sure he grew the cotton, spun it into fabric and stitched it together all by himself. 🙄

As the Volunteers, the University of Tennessee believes in putting others before ourselves

I lived in Tennessee for about 13 years and earned two college degrees in the process. UT indeed puts others before themselves as long as it doesn't inconvenience, implicate or otherwise hinder anyone on the foolsball team.

Or the administration. Or the teachers. Or.............

I think I understand your sentiment bicyclerepair, and unfortunately, I suspect it is a generational thing.

I was bullied fairly mercilessly up until I was 11 or 12, when like you, I finally fought back (in my case, after just taking it for years). For several years when I walked to grade school, there was an older kid who would just wait for me. Every day. He would do everything from throwing my lunch to the wind, to sitting on top of me and dropping a lugi in my face...letting it drip close, sucking it back multiple times, then finally letting it go. (My older brother, who also bullied me and who is now one of my best friends, finally had enough and beat the kid up...he tells me that it was because I was “his to pick on”...:)

Didn’t get bullied after that.

I don’t say this to “advocate” bullying, no sane person would.

But I will say three things:

First, as long as there are human beings, there will be bullying. That is because as long as there are human beings, there will be evil. Someone is always going to want to put you down because they have issues of their own. That is just how it is, and nothing is going to change. Years ago they beat me up, knocked my books out of my hands or tripped me in class. Today they might not be bold enough to do that, but if I were a kid stupid enough to get all tangled up in social media, there would be kids who would do the equivalent electronically.

Secondly, I had to learn to deal with bullies on my own. I learned a lot of valuable lessons on that subject which have served me well to this day, first and foremost, that bullies all have a commonality, be they in international relations, domestic politics, workplace, sports, or social life. They all have common traits, and I learned there is one, and only one way to deal with all of them: Never accommodate or appease them, and always fight back or signal that you are prepared to fight back. And never, ever present yourself as weak, because that INVITES bullies. I am no tough guy, but I learned to conduct myself with a physical air of confidence and a projection of someone you should avoid confronting. It is an act, but I have found that presentation is key in certain areas of life, and preventing people from harassing you by signalling in a variety of ways you will fight back is one of them. This is one of the reasons my whole life that I advocate for a strong, aggressive, but rule-following and moral military, even to the point of being overly-powerful for what is needed. I believe (and always have) that unjustified accommodation, appeasement, weakness, and unpreparedness invite aggression. Always have and always will. I believe a powerful military that has the over-supplied potential to not just beat an opponent, but to squash them mercilessly into a grease spot if pushed to it, is the best way to avoid bloodshed, as long as you both signal the willingness to use that power, and when called on, follow through with it when morally justified.

Thirdly...bullying was part and parcel of what made me who I am today, and I am grateful for it. I have always felt a need to avoid being nasty or aggressive in a bullying way with people because...I didn’t like it when it was done to me. I treat people with respect until they demonstrate they are not worthy of it (I call it “default respect”) and I have always felt the need to stick up for people when I am not the one threatened by unjustified aggression.

I would like to think that I am the Sheepdog in the Wolf, Sheep, and Sheepdog triangle, if things come to that. I loved the book “American Sniper” where Chris Kyle’s father warned his two young sons “I won’t have a Wolf in this family.” That really resonated with me.

For those of us that actually learned how to communicate and write, that’s exactly what the title implies, that he made the shirt, not the logo on it. That’s the way the young author titled it.

Journalism is like that. They are taught to be purposely misleading.
