Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (KS:005930) has ended mobile telephone production in China, it said on Wednesday, hurt by intensifying competition from domestic rivals in the world's biggest smartphone market. The shutdown of Samsung's last China phone factory comes after it cut production at the plant in the southern city of Huizhou in June and suspended another factory late last year, underscoring stiff competition in the country. The South Korean tech giant's ceased phone production in China follows other manufacturers shifting production from China due to rising labor costs and the economic slowdown. Sony also said it was closing its Beijing...

The latest school to officially ban mobile phones has revealed its students have been transformed and are happy they made the change. Lakes Grammar, located north of the NSW Central Coast, implemented the ban in May due to concerns about students playing video games at school. Teaching and Learning Director Michelle Smith said there had been an noticeable increase in interactions, with students far more likely to go out onto the oval or play games together, the Daily Telegraph reported. 'Board games are coming out, cards are out and they are all interacting. We're even seeing them play hopscotch and...

WASHINGTON: After decades of neglect, the Army is urgently rebuilding its electronic warfare arm in a radically different form from the Cold War. The US isn’t trying to replicate the high-powered Russia arsenal that has scrambled GPS, radar, and radio from Scandinavia and Ukraine to Syria and Israel. Instead, the Army intends to combine EW with cyber, signals intelligence, and artificial intelligence to counter Russian power with a new kind of precision. “When the Russians emit like that, they’re letting the entire world known where they are,” Col. Mark Dotson, the Army’s capabilities manager for EW, told reporters in June....

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is out today with a new investor note covering Apple’s supply chain and how President Trump’s latest rounds of tariffs might affect things. Kuo says that he believes “the tariff may not impact the prices of Apple’s hardware products” in the United States.... ...Kuo writes that Apple has likely made “proper preparations” for such a tariff, and he predicts that Apple will “absorb most of the additional costs” in the mid-short term. Thus, Kuo believes that “prices of hardware products and shipment forecasts for the U.S. market will remain unchanged” despite the tariff. In the...

As the headline states, I'm looking to buy a very basic home stereo system with speakers, fm/am radio, and CD ability. I'm not tech savy, nor all that interested in delving into it, but I may not have a choice anymore. Most stereo systems sold today are intermeshed with Bluetooth. I have budgeted up to $250. for it, but hope I needn't go that high. The model I own right now is that way, but I am able to use the CD player and the radio without going through a lot of intricate hooking up. I only plan to change...
  • New crystalline material boasts electronic properties never before seen

May 8 (UPI) -- The study of a unique crystalline material, composed of aluminum and platinum atoms, has revealed a pair of electronic properties that have never been seen before. The atoms in the new materials are crystallized in a special pattern, with each row offset from the other. The pattern creates a spiral staircase of aluminum and platinum atoms. According to the new study, published this week in the journal Nature Physics, the material's unique crystalline structure produces Rarita-Schwinger fermions in its interior and extremely long quadruple topological Fermi arcs on its surface. Rarita-Schwinger fermions are a type of...

I'm looking for 40" preferably NOT a smart tv but it wont be hooked up to internet anyway, but I would like to find one that is under $300 and I could use some advice as to what to choose.

Today on the way home on an 85 degree or so day, my 16 Tacoma's air temp sensor kept dropping steadily until it hit -34 outside. The truck runs fine, no errors on the dash, performance seemed the same. In the last few miles, it started registering a little above 0 degrees. I got home no problem and changed the sensor out since I had a spare on hand. I did unhook the battery first. After swapping and powering back up, air temp was a steady 20 something degrees. No warning lights. Normal sounding and running. I found a default...

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that his country will ban US electronics after a diplomatic feud pushed it into a currency crisis. He specifically highlighted Apple, the Associated Press reports, saying Turkey would stop bringing in iPhones in favor of devices from South Korea's Samsung or Turkey's own Vestel. "We will implement a boycott against America's electronic goods," he said. "If they have the iPhone, there is Samsung elsewhere. We have Vestel." It's not clear how Erdogan would enforce the boycott, the AP noted. A boycott would serve as retaliation against the US sanctions on two Turkish ministers...

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday said that Turkey would boycott electronic products from the United States. "We will boycott America's electronic products. If they have the iPhone, there is also Samsung on the other side. We also have our own Venus Vestel. We will adopt these measures," Hurriyet Daily News quoted Erdogan as saying. He added, "We can do two things; one in economy, the other in politics. We have taken measures that economy needs and we will keep doing it. "What is more important, I think, is keeping our political stance strong." The rift between the US...

By making carbon leak (trickle down) through cracks on copper, researchers have developed a new process for “growing” graphene directly on materials used for nano-scale electronic applications, thereby opening the way to produce high-performance electronic devices. This versatile process, developed by a team of chemical engineers led by Indian-American Vikas Berry at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in the US, enables graphene to be economically grown on almost any semiconducting or dielectric substrate of relevance to the electronic industry, the researchers claim. They have reported this new method in the journal “ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces” of the...
  • Why North Korea Is An Untapped Goldmine For Tech Companies, And For China

It was revealed recently that North Korea is sitting on approximately $6 trillion worth of natural resources, which the country lacks the technology or expertise to extract. The impoverished nation is quite literally sitting on a goldmine, a significant portion of which is made up of rare earth metals. Rare earth metals are not - as you would expect - exceptionally rare, but are generally found in small trace quantities underground. What is rare is to find them in high concentrations, which is exactly what experts believe is present beneath the soil of North Korea. Not only are these resources...

A great deal of the electricity in the United States goes to waste. Much is lost in the initial generation of electricity. And much is lost through the use of inefficient devices, like incandescent light bulbs that heat up a filament to produce light. But power is also lost in between, on the grid, as it is carried along hundreds of miles of wires, repeatedly shifted between different voltages, and converted from AC to DC and back, all in the split second between the time it enters the grid and the time it powers your computer. How much power is...

Despite a winter that seems to have pushed spring out of the way to make room for an early summer, the usual stuff you do during spring still need to be done. This could be the first car wax job of the year, the final throwing out of all that Christmas wrapping you were hoping to use for re-gifting, or just the first mowing of the lawn. And according to IT security company ESET, there's some stuff you can and maybe should be doing to help ensure your technology is brought into the new year as well, whether it be...

ZTE, the Chinese telecoms equipment maker, is estimated to have lost more than $2bn in revenue since the imposition of a ban on the supply of US components by Washington last month, according to calculations based on last year’s figures. ZTE reported full-year revenues of Rmb108.8bn ($17bn) in 2017, or an average of $1.4bn a month. The US ban on supplying parts to ZTE — after the group was found to have violated sanctions against North Korea and Iran — was imposed roughly six weeks ago, implying lost revenues of more than $2bn. The potential reversal of the US ban...

Donald Trump, in only the 4th time in 70 years, disallowed the merger of Broadcom and QUALCOMM. Broadcom is the 5G leader out of Singapore with ties to Huawei, the giant Chinese electronics conglomerate that's also heavily tied to the PLA. The merger would have resulted in the dismantling of Qualcomm, with Broadcom and Huawei taking any advanced 5G technology and leaving the rest for scraps.
