I'm sick of the current tv we have, it was a cheap off brand, and I'm looking for a good quality replacement, but there are so many different suppliers out there it is hard to find one at a decent cost. I'm looking for 40" preferably NOT a smart tv but it wont be hooked up to internet anyway, but I would like to find one that is under $300 and I could use some advice as to what to choose.
You can always try to find a good, used Sony. I’ve had excellent luck with all I’ve owned. Also, if a member of Sam’s Club? Try post-Christmas sales. Sure Costco would likewise have bargains.
When we were shopping for TVs a couple years ago, it seems the answer we got from everyone was that all TVs are smart TVs now. Anyhow, we got three — all Samsungs. They’ve been great. I had to call Samsung tech support many months ago with a question, and the rep was wonderful.
Sony plasma 40 inch. Very good color.
Any of the TV’s at Walmart or Costco that LG, Samsung

Sharp does it for us.
If you are a Veteran you can shop Army Air Force Exchange. No taxes and free shipping.
Truth be known, probably all TVs are manufactured by just one or two companies.
Looking at them in the store I really can’t tell the difference in picture quality from different brands tho I am sure there is some.
It seems 4K is the next big thing but no one is broadcasting that yet. I bought a cheap ($139) 43 inch at WalMart and the picture is fine. The sound is pretty mediocre tho. It is 1080 dpi resolution too.
I noticed they will be selling a 40 inch 1080 during Black Friday for only $99.
We have two SANYO's for about 260 ea. and both are SMART
We bought a 42 inch Sharp Roku TV at WalMart. It is great. Super user interface, great picture.
Paladinkc — what do you have against hooking it up to the internet? That’s where all the great content is nowadays. I use Netflix and Amazon Prime with some YouTube thrown in. We got rid of our conventional cable TV and instead opted for Spectrum (Time Warner) “TV Choice.” You run the Spectrum TV app and get your channels “over the top,” i.e. via the Internet. It cut our combined Cable / Internet bill to $70 per month, about 60% off what we were paying before.
Non-smart tv? Vizido
They’re all pretty much the same these days. If it matters, get one with a higher count of pixels. Shop the Black Friday and Christmas sales.
You probably can find a new Vizio in that range. I see where prices have really come down. I have two Vizio’s and a Smart TV Samsung and the Vizio’s are older but still have wonderful Picture’s. I am amazed at them.
At least 65”. Google “tv viewing distance chart”.
Ridiculous prices on meats.
We have all Samsung on the computers and the TVs. Not one has failed.
Not the best sound in the world but a sound bar takes care of that.

Sceptre 43 inches 4K LED TV (Price: $199.99 & FREE Shipping)
I paid $300
Hard to find a dumb TV these days. We’ve got a 39/40 inch sound bar with sub-woofer from wally world.
Speaking of, https://www.walmart.com/ip/SAMSUNG-43-Class-4K-2160P-Ultra-HD-Smart-LED-TV-UN43NU6900-2018-Model/840956662
$277.99 with free shipping for a Samsung. I went there to see what soundbar we got and saw “Samsung Event”. I’d have gotten this if it was this price when I was looking. I don’t see the soundbar we got. They’re pretty cheap and kind of necessary for these new TVs. They automatically assume you’ll either have a soundbar or a surround system these days so the speakers in new TVs are little sucky things. ymmv and I’m sure a Samsung will have better sound than a Sceptre. Sceptre seems to be about the biggest china brand. Been around quite a few years.
