Over the course of his brief, polarizing career in electoral politics, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has been called many names, especially by liberals. "Dirty Syrup Guzzler" (Jon Stewart). "Creature from the Nether Regions" (Cher). “"The Most Dangerous Canadian in America" (the Huffington Post). Yet so far the most indelible description of Cruz has come from a fellow conservative. In 2013, when Cruz decided to protest U.S. drone policy by filibustering the nomination of incoming CIA chief John Brennan, John McCain told reporter Jon Ward.. now a senior political correspondent for Yahoo News .. that his junior colleague was a "wacko...

Ted Cruz's long-anticipated Iowa surge came a step closer on Tuesday with a new poll showing him just behind Donald J. Trump and leaping ahead of Ben Carson, as terrorism and foreign policy now drive the 2016 nominating race. Mr. Cruz, the Republican Texas senator, was the choice of 23 percent of likely Republican caucusgoers in the new poll, from Quinnipiac University, following Mr. Trump at 25 percent and ahead of Mr. Carson at 18 percent. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida was in fourth with 13 percent. The margin of error was plus or minus four percentage points. Just a...

Donald Trump gets 25 percent of Iowa likely Republican Caucus participants in a too-close-tocall race with Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas who is at 23 percent, double his support from four weeks ago, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Dr. Ben Carson has 18 percent, with Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida at 13 percent. This compares to the results of an October 22 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University showing Carson at 28 percent, with 20 percent for Trump, Rubio at 13 percent and Cruz at 10 percent.

Donald Trump has company on the Iowa GOP presidential podium, as Sen. Ted Cruz has moved within the margin of error at the top of a new Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday. The real estate magnate wins one-quarter of likely Republican caucus-goers, compared to the Texas senator's 23 percent. Ben Carson, the former neurosurgeon who edged Trump out for the lead in last month's Quinnipiac poll, sits in third with 18 percent while Sen. Marco Rubio rounds out the upper-tiers of candidates with 13 percent. Rubio's support holds steady from Quinnipiac's October poll, while Cruz's has more than doubled from...

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump is daring Time magazine to recognize him as its Person of the Year for 2015. Trump is challenging the publication despite trailing 10 other people in a reader poll concerning the annual honor. "We have somebody from Time magazine here," he told listeners during a rally in Birmingham, Ala., last Saturday, according to the magazine. "You know, I was on the cover recently," Trump said. "Now they're here again, so I assume they're considering me for 'man of the year.' "I say there's no way they give it to me," the outspoken billionaire added. "Because...

Ohio Gov. John Kasich launched an all-out attack Monday on Donald Trump as the billionaire stumped in Kasich's home state. In advance of a planned Trump speech in Columbus, Kasich unveiled a new ad highlighting Trump's controversial comments in support of registering Muslim citizens in the United States. Separately, Kasich's super PAC debuted another ad featuring many of Trump's most outlandish comments, including "blood" coming out Fox News' Megyn Kelly, joking, "If Ivanka weren't my daughter perhaps I'd be dating her" and gushing, "I have a great relationship with the blacks."

People can be forgiven if they don't know whether to believe Donald Trump's claim that he saw Muslims celebrating 9/11 in New Jersey. But I, a New Yorker who was nearly killed in 9/11 and had that day burned into my memory, saw it with my own eyes. There was a video aired of the incident. I remember seeing obviously Arab-looking individuals dancing and shouting for joy on rooftops. There were less than thousands of them, but there were way more than a handful. And it wasn't in the Gaza Strip. I know Jersey City well enough to be able...

It's been said to me a number of times from Republican activists of every stripe. Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum, both former Iowa caucus winners, just don't have it this time around, and thus, they should take the cue and get out of the Republican race for president. In the poll-driven presidential campaign that has also been overly nationalized, I completely understand why this sort of thinking is prevalent in Iowa less than three months before people will head out to caucus. While the size of the Republican field has been reduced, it's still large and cumbersome. And after watching...

The super PACs going after Donald Trump are making a "bad, bad decision," the candidate's special counsel and adviser warned Tuesday morning, saying that if the reports are true, "it changes everything." "Donald Trump wants to be treated fairly. He will demand that the GOP treat them fairly," Michael Cohen told CNN's Chris Cuomo on "New Day." If the party does treat him fairly, Trump "will honor the pledge because he’s an honorable guy," he said. But, "if they break that agreement with him, as they say, woe be on them," Cohen cautioned, referring to the loyalty agreement Trump signed,...

nemy: Donald Trump. The networks want Trump to ease restrictions placed on reporterscovering his events, the Washington Post reports. Over the past few weeks, stories have surfaced that indicate a particularly volatile relationship between Trump and the media. At a rally last Tuesday, a Trump aide threatened to revoke Noah Gray‘s media credentials after the CNN reporter briefly left the designated press area to cover a #BlackLivesMatter protester. The aide told Noah to “get back in the pen†or risk being “f*cking blacklisted.†At a rally Friday, Trump barred members of the press from covering the event, including reporters from...

Trump's racism is bad for Republicans now, but the eventual wild-eyed nominee will only look moderate in comparison.Since the Donald Trump campaign kicked off with demagoguery about Mexican immigration, political watchers have been on quiet but alert fascism watch, carefully monitoring Trump to see if he steps over the line. You can feel in your bones that Trump and his supporters long for to give into the sweet oblivion of balls-out racism, rather than dealing with the tedious process of carefully measuring the lines so you can toe them without stepping so far over that liberal journalists are freed up...

Donald Trump's interview with George Stephanopoulos on ABC's This Week (above) is a great distillation of why covering the Republican frontrunner is proving so difficult for mainstream press outlets. On the one hand, he demands coverage. He's leading the race everywhere: nationally, in Iowa, in New Hampshire, in South Carolina. And with the exception of a brief surge for Ben Carson that's quickly dissipating, Trump has been leading consistently for more than three months. So outlets like ABC and shows like This Week would, naturally, like the longstanding GOP frontrunner to appear on their programs from time to time. It...

As millions of Americans prepare to travel for the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, the State Department warned that potential attackers could target private or government interests. "Authorities believe the likelihood of terror attacks will continue as members of (Islamic State) return from Syria and Iraq," it said. "Additionally, there is a continuing threat from unaffiliated persons planning attacks inspired by major terrorist organizations but conducted on an individual basis."

Nearly a dozen big Republican donors backing different presidential candidates are coming together to help fund an advertising campaign attacking front-runner Donald Trump, who faced sharp criticism from rivals this week for his inflammatory comments about Muslims. Matt David, spokesman for the group planning the attack, a Super PAC called New Day for America, which is supporting Ohio Governor John Kasich's presidential bid, said 10 new donors had pledged money in the two days since Politico reported Thursday evening the group's plans to attack Trump in New Hampshire....

You shouldn't trust Rubio. Senator Marco Rubio is running for president but he doesn't want you to know about his past views on guns. Take a note at this research on him opposing lawful gun owning. Rubio Favored Restrictions On Florida Gun Owners In His 2000 State House Race, Rubio Supported Waiting Periods On Gun Purchases. "'Background checks are necessary and the sale of guns at shows should be limited,' Garcia said. 'Furthermore, safety locks should be required. I am also against honoring the concealed weapons permits of other states in our state.' Rubio supports 'reasonable restrictions' including background checks...

A super-PAC supporting Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz is making its biggest investment to date, installing a data-driven grassroots operation in early-voting South Carolina.Keep the Promise PAC has hired 14 full-time field directors and county organizers in the state, which holds one of the nation's first primary contests, the group said in a statement. Recruited to lead the South Carolina team is former state Rep. Dan Tripp (R), who had spearheaded efforts there for the now-defunct presidential campaign of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. "This significant investment in South Carolina is indicative of the growing national support for Sen. Cruz," Tripp...

Donald Trump must apologize to Muslim Americans and to Jersey City for his untrue, divisive and reprehensible comments perpetuating an old rumor we thought had rightly died. By repeating – and indeed embellishing – this hateful rumor, Trump once again ratchets up the ugliness in the current political climate. Thousands and thousands of people in Jersey City did not cheer the destruction of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Period. End of story. There is no need to continue to "fact check'' his words. The truth is that Trump's statements are factually, ethically and morally wrong. Those of...
