Ted Cruz Makes a Big Leap in Iowa, Poll Says (Carson drops 10 points in 1 month; Jeb drops to 4%)

Ted Cruz's long-anticipated Iowa surge came a step closer on Tuesday with a new poll showing him just behind Donald J. Trump and leaping ahead of Ben Carson, as terrorism and foreign policy now drive the 2016 nominating race.

Mr. Cruz, the Republican Texas senator, was the choice of 23 percent of likely Republican caucusgoers in the new poll, from Quinnipiac University, following Mr. Trump at 25 percent and ahead of Mr. Carson at 18 percent. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida was in fourth with 13 percent. The margin of error was plus or minus four percentage points.

Just a month ago, Mr. Carson seemed to be running away with the Iowa nominating contest with support from the Christian right, polling at 28 percent in a Quinnipiac poll in late October, followed by Mr. Trump at 20 percent.

-snip-

Four years ago, an establishment Republican, Mitt Romney, was in the top tier of candidates two months before the caucuses and went on to finish in a near-tie for first. Jeb Bush was supposed to own that lane this year, but he has never gained traction in the state. Mr. Bush was the choice of just 4 percent of Republicans, down from 5 percent in October.

Will Trump attack him? How? Nasal voice?

CBS had Ted Cruz at 22%, and now Quinnipiac has Cruz at 23%, just 2 points behind Trump. This poll confirms that the CBS poll was no one off fluke. Dat Steve King endorsement has worked wonders. It seems Cruz is grabbing all the good doctor's defecting supporters.

Don Trump either made a mistake going after Carson on a personal level, or he’s ceding Iowa to Cruz. I think the latter.

Trump attacked Carson, rhetorically called Iowans “stupid” and didn’t show up at Vander Plaat’s event. Certainly, Trump is savvy enough to know that’s not the way to win Iowa.

At Thanksgiving, do you think Jeb! will blame his brother George for his low poll numbers?

Trump will be foolish to attack Cruz. He is going to need to treat Cruz being high in the polls, the same way Cruz has treated Trump being high in the polls for months, and that is with grace and maturity. However, with Trump being Trump, he might very well go crazy on Cruz. We will see I guess.

I wonder how much longer the media can continue to ignore Cruz and not even use him in their phony polls against Hillary?

Rubio is still much too high in the Iowa poll at 13%. Iowans that know Rubio’s record and still like him must have a very high tolerance for betrayal. Even if supporters don't care about illegal immigration, why should they believe anything he says on any topic during a campaign when he has proven he will say one thing to get elected and do the opposite when in office?

For the life of me I cannot find the infatuation with Carson.

And I dont know why Cruz isn’t leading, He says the same things Trump does except in a much more articulate way.
I’ll support Trump. But it should be Cruz in the long run.
