I'll be honest: I'm the result of a private school education, Kindergarten through Law School. My wife, however, is the exact opposite—a product of only public school. My mother-in-law is the product of public school, and was a public school elementary teacher and administrator for over 30 years. My parents went to public schools K-12. I think all of us turned out just fine. There are some excellent public schools in this country, just like there are some excellent private schools. I'm thankful for the education I received and thankful my parents could afford the choices they made for my...

My oldest son who has been homeschooled by my wife and received over 1300 on PSATs is now being inundated by colleges. This one came yesterday. Never heard of the school, but how many here would be intrigued by this postcard?

A young American diplomat was the leading force in the designing of the United Nations. He was secretary of the Dumbarten Oaks Conversations from August to October of 1944 where most of the preliminary planning for the U.N. was done. He was Roosevelt's right-hand man in February of 1945 at Yalta where the postwar boundaries of Europe were drawn (Roosevelt was a dying man at the time. His death came only ten weeks later). At Yalta, it was agreed that the Soviet Union would have three votes (one each for Russia, Ukraine, and Byelorussia) in the U.N. General Assembly, even...

FULL TITLE: North Carolina mother catches daycare worker breastfeeding her three-month-old son on surveillance video A North Carolina mother says surveillance video at the day care where she works caught another worker breastfeeding her three-month-old son without permission. Kaycee Oxendine works at the Carrboro Early School, located about 30 miles outside of Durham, as a pre-kindergarten teacher. On Friday, Oxendine said her son's teacher told her he was constipated. Another woman working in the nursery that day asked Oxendine if she could breastfeed the little boy to see if that would help with the constipation, according to ABC 11. But...

Despite a rising citywide graduation rate, the number of students with the skills to succeed in college is alarmingly low — even at some schools that hand out the most diplomas, a Post analysis found. College readiness sunk to 1.9 percent last year at the FDNY HS for Fire and Life Safety in Brooklyn, which had an 83 percent graduation rate in 2016, city reports show.

Kiran Kruse’s free throws with 1.2 seconds left beat St. Francis in OT, keep Bells unbeaten in WCALIn one of the loudest gyms he said he’d ever played in, on the home court of his school’s archrival, Bellarmine College Prep’s Kiran Kruse stepped to the free-throw line with 1.2 seconds left in overtime Saturday night and the score tied. But all the sophomore could think about was his friend, beloved classmate Daniel Cole, who passed away in his sleep during the week from causes still not known. “I really just wanted to knock those free throws down, get this win...

Growing evidence of a link between football hits and brain injuries has led all 50 states to pass laws aimed at protecting young people from concussions, but a New York lawmaker wants to go even further — banning tackle football. "Football is the only major sport where on every single play, the objective is to violently hit the competition," said Assemblyman Michael Benedetto, whose measure would bar youth football leagues from allowing anyone 13 or younger to tackle. And while his bill has gained little support since the Bronx Democrat first introduced it four years ago, with some legislative colleagues...

Beloit Police Chief David Zibolski is speaking out after a hate crime, reported on Beloit College's campus, turned out to be fake. Beloit College is located in Wisconsin. "There were certain indicators that led us to believe there was a little more to the story," he said on Thursday. The fake hate crime occurred last weekend at Beloit College, a 1,400-student bastion bursting with idiosyncratic individualists who enjoy leftist politics. The student has been charged....

Mussolini had become a member of the Socialist Party in 1900 and had begun to attract wide admiration. In speeches and articles he was extreme and violent, urging revolution at any cost, but he was also well spoken. Mussolini held several posts as editor and labor leader until he emerged in the 1912 Socialist Party Congress. He became editor of the party's daily paper, Avanti, at the age of twenty-nine. His powerful writing injected excitement into the Socialist ranks. In a party that had accomplished little in recent years, his youth and his intense nature was an advantage. He called...

Our Animal House Posted on December 19, 2016 by Robin (Reader Advisory: explicit content) I had one of those sad Berkeley days. I did errands around town, and beheld the tragedy that is Berkeley, Oakland, and the like. I needed to do some business near Gilman and Eastshore Freeway. If you’re ever in town, take a drive over there. The area personifies the horror that is Berkeley. At Gilman, there is what is called a “homeless encampment.” This translates into a lot of druggies and dealers, drifters, and runways, as well as psychotics, living and sleeping out in the wild....

Did Complex Flight Feathers "Emerge"? Evolution News & Views February 2, 2017 2:34 AM | Permalink Here's a thought experiment. Consider something you know is intelligently designed: for example, software code for an app that flies a drone. Now let's describe its "emergence" in Darwinian langauge: Once assembly language emerged, it diversified into logic gates of increasing complexity, as crawling robots co-opted various functions for novel adaptations, including powered flight. The coding mechanism driving this spectacular process remains unclear. Through morphological analysis of robots in various stages of development, we identify two logic gates that act as major controllers for...

How to Spot a Fake Science News Story By Alex Berezow After more than six years in science journalism, I have reached two very disturbing conclusions about the craft.First, too many science journalists don't actually possess a well-rounded knowledge of science. In many cases, regular reporters are asked to cover complex science and health stories. What we end up with is entirely predictable: Articles that are nothing more than rehashed press releases, topped with click-bait headlines based on exaggerations and misunderstandings of the original research. That's how a nonsensical story like Nutella causing cancer goes viral. Second, science journalists are every bit...
