A team of European scientists with way too much time on its hands has discovered that dogs tend to position themselves in alignment with the earth’s magnetic field before they take every big, steamy dump. The Czech and German researchers committed two years of their professional lives to the longitudinal study of canine crap, reports The Christian Science Monitor. The point was to determine magnetic sensitivity in dogs—at least when they poop. The proud scientists say the findings “open new horizons for biomagnetic research.” There were 37 dog owners in Germany and the Czech Republic involved in the study. There...

There was a happy ending for a dog that became lost and was found a long way from home. A couple in Arizona spotted a wandering dog while they were out 4-wheeling on New Year's Day. They traced the owner through the animal's rabies tag. The dog belongs to an 86-year-old rancher in Junction, up in the Texas Hill Country. She was 800 miles from home. The dog was picked up in Arizona Friday and the owner thinks she was scared by fireworks on New Year's Eve and ran away. But it's still a mystery how she ended up all...

Reports that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un had his uncle Jang Song Thaek executed by feeding him to a pack of 120 ravenous dogs was met with mixed reactions in the US. On the one hand, some environmental activists expressed relief that the traditional “bullet-to-the-back-of-the-head” method previously used by North Korea had been avoided. “Lead shot is a major factor in environmental pollution,” said Global Advocates for Environmental Awareness spokesperson, Laura Looney. “Granted, the absolute impact of one bullet is tiny. However, the turn toward a more organic method of disposal of unwanted criminals is a powerful symbolic statement...

Putting aside the Islamic scientific proof that the earth is flat, or that Mecca is the center of the universe, the Islamo-centric information and cultural news portal Islam Online (of Doha, Qatar) has reported on Dec. 21, 2013, that Islamic Sharia Law proves scientifically that humans should never keep dogs as pets. Of the millions of websites on the internet, Islam Online ranks as one of the more widely read information hubs available world-wide. Their wildly popular Ask the Scholar section tackles the age old question if it's permissible for Muslims to own dogs as pets.

A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY USING A NEW APPROACH In December, 2013, The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) published the most comprehensive multifactorial study of dog bite-related fatalities (DBRFs) to be completed since the subject was first studied in the 1970’s.[1] It is based on investigative techniques not previously employed in dog bite or DBRF studies and identified a significant co-occurrence of multiple potentially preventable factors. Experts have for decades recommended a range of ownership and husbandry practices to reduce the number of dog bite injuries.[2] This new JAVMA paper confirms the multifaceted approach to dog bite prevention recommended...

In Saskatoon, Canada, Muslim taxi drivers are refusing to give rides to blind people with seeing-eye dogs. The drivers have been citing religious grounds, saying dogs are considered “unclean” animals in Islam. […] Muslim antagonism towards dogs is not a new thing in Canada. The Wings of Rescue 3rd Annual Holiday Airlift whisked 500 shelter pooches aboard 14 flights to 11 cities up to the Pacific Northwest, saving each from near-certain euthanasia. “We’re loading to Helena, (Montana) now,” barked Woodland Hills real-estate developer Yehuda Netanel, a native of Israel and cofounder of Wings of Rescue, which since 2009 has flown more than 5,000 Southern California shelter dogs to safety. “We either do it or the dogs die, so the choice is clear.” Unable to find “fur-ever” families in Southern California, these last-chance animals were being airlifted to Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana, where they...
