Last May a police officer hit a new low when he intentionally hit an Australian shepherd mix named Freckles with his car to stop him from approaching a group of children. He claimed he thought Freckles would harm them, but Freckles owner, Sarah Hecht, maintains that he was not dangerous and that he could have been stopped without using deadly force.
I have no doubt my dog would still be alive if the officer had on iota of training on dog behavior and dog psychology, Hecht, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. There was no reason for deadly force.
In response to the incident with Freckles and many others that could have been avoided, Nevada Senator David Parks is planning on introducing legislation that will require police officers to complete training on how to deal with dogs without using deadly force, and hes getting support from local animal lovers.

That might ruin their day if they have to deal with dogs without being able to resort to shooting them.

One of these days a dog owner is going to return fire on an officer. I will not know who I should send condolences to.

Dogs have been protecting children a lot longer than cops have.

She could have helped by merely pulling back on her dog leash. Oh, wait...

Exactly. Dogs have no more business running around off-leash than kids do...

My feelings exactly. As for condolences, the Dog Owner. Any cop that would shoot a dog for no good reason, needs to be spending a few years behind bars.

Dogs have been protecting children a lot longer than cops have. And have done a better job over all.

Exactly. Dogs have no more business running around off-leash than kids do... I own 40 acres of wooded land. My dogs and my grandkids will run around on that land as I please. Don't show up and try to tell me any different, it will not go well.

Changing training for cops regarding how they react to dogs would be of great help
Because so many drug dealers and gang bangers use dogs to attack police and other gangs...police are now being taught to just shoot dogs...this will probably be revised

The cops don't need training. This is a ruse. They need to be prosecuted for the use of excessive force and sent to jail. They shoot dogs because they get away with it. That leads to killing homeowners defending their homes that clearly aren't meth houses, or shooting honest citizens with cell-phones in their hands, or children carrying toy guns.
We jail kids who kill animals and argue that they're socio-pathic. This same logic applies to people dressed in nice blue uniforms.
