Oaks/Valley Forge, PA Jewel, a dominant American Foxhound on the dog show circuit all year, won The National Dog Show Presented by Purina during the annual Kennel Club of Philadelphia cluster at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center. GCH Kiarrys Pandoras Box (aka Jewel) was selected by Best in Show Judge Randy E. Garren from among the seven canines emerging from the judging of over 1,500 dogs at the tradition-rich, all-breed show.
The three year-old bitch is also the first winner in the 12-year history of The National Dog Show to come from the Hound Group. Every other group has had at least one winner over the years that consist of five Terrier, two Sporting, and one each from the Working, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding Groups.
After successfully defending her 2012 Hound Group win at the show, Jewel edged out a Bearded Collie, a Pekingese, a Norfolk Terrier, a Standard Schnauzer, a Bichon Frise and an Irish Water Spaniel on the Best in Show stage. Jewel also won the Hound Group at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this past February.

She is a beauty.
Yes indeed!
Nice to see an honest-to-goodness dog win, instead of all those other slipper-wanna-be’s!
When I was a whipperin for the Longreen Hounds (Rossville, Tennessee), we had Penn-MaryDel hounds, an improved version of the American foxhound.

MALINOIS
They always cheat the Golden Retrievers.
Hasn’t a Golden Retriever ever won Best in Show?
Never at the televised shows. They seldom even win Best in Group in order to make it to the Best in Show ring.
I just don’t understand it, since they are the 2nd most popular breed after the Labs. And a lot of them enter (more than 100 at Westminster). So, think about it: if 100 dogs compete at the breed level, the top one must be a good example of its breed, wouldn’t you think? Since all of the dogs are judged on how good an example of their breed the winner over another (similar) 100 dogs must be a pretty good example. Yet, they never seem to make it to Best in Group (Sporting), let alone Best in Show.
Yet those ugly Pekinese win multiple times. Or, some of the lesser known breeds will make it to the Best in Group ring after they’ve beaten just a few members of their breed (7 or 5, for instance). It doesn’t seem fair.
Re: the Pekinese. They don’t even look like the same dog as the Pekinese of the 1950s.
I think these shows are fixed.
I love the hounds and also boxers (my fav).
Have you ever heard of a Sussex Spaniel?
A former Best of Breeds champion is Stump: a Sussex Spaniel who is a Breed Champion and a Field champion in his Sporting category. He is one of the very, very few Sussex Spaniels in the USA and yes, he did win Best of Breeds a few years back.
When you’re good at something and there are not many competitors, well...you end being like Stumpy. An all around champion and the dog who gets all the hot Sussex bitches.
I own a field bred Springer Spaniel and a Golden Retriever. Neither are of show bench quality but both are birdy and would make good hunting dogs. The Golden is especially adept as a guard dog.
I’ve been to one dog show and it stank like dog poop. Never again.
Beagle puppies would win every year if I was the judge!
Yes, I remember the year Stump won. In fact, I think I saw him win more than one show. But, he was cute — not like those ugly Pekinese! They used to replay the dog shows on Sat. morning on Animal Planet, and I watched them all.
My late brother in law used to show poodles professionally. Frankly, I’ve never been too impressed by the folks who hang around dog shows. My late BIL was short tempered and impatient with the dogs in his care, and he didn’t treat his children much better. He later went into horses.
Have never understood the great popularity of the Pekinese. With the face of an alien space invader protruding from a 'duster', they often win the toy group. Yet, I have never seen one walking down the street or at a pet store.
Malinois.Best guard/personal protection dog ever.
Anyone ever read “The Black Marble” by Joseph Wambaugh?
That white symoyed (sp?) was easily the most beautiful of them all.

Washington dog found after 9 days under rubble
18 minutes ago Associated Press
WASHINGTON, Ill. | A dog and his owner have been reunited after the animal was found under a pile of rubble more than a week after a tornado ripped through a central Illinois city.
Jacob Montgomery of Washington and his dog Dexter were separated when the Nov. 17 tornado damaged Montgomery’s third floor apartment.
Montgomery is a member of the Illinois National Guard.
A guard spokesman says a neighbor sent Montgomery a Facebook message nine days later to tell him Dexter had been found under debris where the apartment used to be.
An animal rescuing organization had coaxed the 6-month-old puppy out of the rubble with hot dogs.
A veterinarian found Dexter to be malnourished, but without any major injuries.
Montgomery says as soon as the dog saw him “his tail started going.”
The best part of the Thanksgiving .
