  • Dodgers broadcaster Charley Steiner to be inducted into Radio Hall of Fame

    Los Angeles Times ^ | November 8 2013 | Bill Dwyre
Saturday night at a black tie dinner in Chicago, a Dodgers broadcaster will go into the Hall of Fame and it won't be Vin Scully. A shocker? No. Scully is already there. If there is a Hall of Fame that has any connection whatsoever to broadcasting and Scully isn't in it, it's a lousy Hall of Fame. Now, Charley Steiner will be joining him. That means, next year, when fans tune in to Dodgers' baseball, they will be informed and entertained by two Hall-of-Famers. That's far from the norm, maybe a first, and should make Dodgers fans proud. Even if...

  • Andy Pafko dies, played in last Cubs World Series

Chicago Tribune ^ | October 9, 2013 | Mark Gonzales and Paul Sullivan
Former Cubs star Andy Pafko had a good bat, a memorable nickname and a reputation as one of the friendliest players in the game. Pafko, 92, died Tuesday in a nursing home in Stevensville, Mich., the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. A popular five-time All-Star who played 17 seasons and appeared in 24 World Series games — including the Cubs' last visit to the Series in 1945 — Pafko had a lifetime .285 average with 213 home runs and 976 RBIs playing for the Cubs, Brooklyn Dodgers and Milwaukee Braves.
  • Where's Craig Kimbrel? Not in the game (Oct. Baseball Live Thread)

Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings. Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer .... Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel." The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game. The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using...

Vin Scully recently announced he will return next year for a 65th season announcing baseball. He now says 2014 may be his last. "Right, I'm pretty well sure – and I don’t want to go back and forth with it – but I'm looking to next year and thinking that should be about it," Scully told KPCC in a recent interview.

PASADENA, Calif. - Vin Scully will usher in 2014 as grand marshal of the 125th Rose Parade, an honour the Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster initially wasn't sure he would accept. The more he thought about it, though, the more he warmed up to the idea, calling it "one of those one-in-a-million experiences." Scully will be joined by his wife, Sandi, for the 5 1/2-mile ride down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena on Jan. 1.

Tuesday night, the Dodgers host the Cubs in Dodger Stadium and they are having possibly the best ballpark giveaway of the season. It's Rick Monday 'flag-saving' bobblehead night. That is, it commemorates the time Cubs outfielder Rick Monday saved an American flag was being burnt on the Dodgers Stadium outfield from a few protestors.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, an icon in American sports history, will return to the Dodger broadcast booth for an unprecedented 65th season in 2014, it was announced. Scully will again call all Dodger home games and road games in California and Arizona. "I have thoroughly enjoyed the excitement of this season and there is no way I could leave this truly remarkable team and our great fans," Scully said. "With my wife Sandi's blessing, I've decided I'd like to come back and do it again next season. I love what the new ownership has brought to the team,...

As a lifetime Dodger fan dating back to the early 1950s when they were still in Brooklyn, N.Y., I never thought I would thank the Yankees for anything, but I do, indeed, pay tribute to them for coming to Los Angeles recently to play our Dodgers. Their presence, as the historic gold standard for Major League Baseball, enriched this city more than anyone will fully appreciate. Not only did they give the surging L.A. baseball franchise a serious test of its new found swagger, but they also allowed our iconic play-by-play broadcaster, Bronx-born Vin Scully, to remind us why he's...

The best part of this job is the people you meet and the relationships developed over the course of the years. To that end, it was an honor to sit down recently and talk with Vin Scully. It's mindboggling to realize that Scully has been broadcasting Dodgers games on radio-television in Brooklyn and Los Angeles since 1950, a year before I was born ... During the course of a 20-minute conversation, I asked him about his stellar career and the Dodgers of yesterday and today. You may be surprised at some of his answers ...
  • Does Yasiel Puig's exuberance make him a target?

If you are a rookie, you are to behave as if you were paint coated on a wall. You can be seen, but you shouldn't be heard. And, above all, you shouldn't make a spectacle of yourself. Yasiel Puig comes from another baseball culture, a freer, Cuban style, and he refuses to play by the blue-collar code of this country's game. In the minor leagues, he was famous for his bat flips, even in batting practice. Already, he has developed a dugout dance with Luis Cruz or Hanley Ramirez after he hits home runs.

Matt Kemp is the face of the Dodgers' franchise, which makes it easy for Giants fans to dislike the All-Star outfielder. Those fans may not want to watch a feel-good video of Kemp taken this past weekend when his Dodgers were swept by the Giants. Good luck harboring any ill feelings toward Kemp after watching the special treatment he gave a disabled fan at AT&T Park. "Matt Kemp is such a great person. He came over after the game and made one of my best friends night :) he's fighting a tough battle and this was such a great gift...

Voice of the Dodgers reminds writer of his deceased dad, and that's part of the reason he loves to talk to the 85-year-old icon. I lost my dad decades ago. But then this guy comes along who likes to sing as he walks, a jolly Irishman who laughs and cracks wise with a hint of the devil in him and I remember that guy ... "I would be frightened if I retired," he says when asked about the prospect. "I don't know what I would do." ...

Piazza did himself no favors on that score in his new book, "Long Shot." In the book, he blames iconic Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully for turning fans against him during the contract stalemate that preceded his trade to the Florida Marlins in 1998.

San Francisco is seeking $1.2 million from the Los Angeles Dodgers in federal Bankruptcy Court to recoup unpaid medical costs for Bryan Stow, a Giants fan who was severely beaten by rival fans in the Dodger Stadium parking lot. The city's effort - spelled out in recent court filings - follows the Stow family's lawsuit against the Dodgers in Los Angeles County Superior Court, claiming that lax security and other problems contributed to the March 2011 attack after an Opening Day game. San Francisco has identified the Dodgers as potentially liable for Stow's bills, and is setting itself up as...
