Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.
Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....
Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."
The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.
The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.
But what’s the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesn’t even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.
So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.
... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.
This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...
Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.
October is not the regular season.
Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.
He ended up getting none.

If Rays are going with Price in game 5, LHP Moore and RHP Archer are both available out the pen today. Hellickson was HORRIBLE in September.

“Hellickson’s season breaks down neatly into four chunks.
First, an absolutely bipolar phase of 14 starts, four great, ten awful: game scores of 71 (against us) and 76 back-to-back in his 2nd and 3rd starts, and 69 in each of his 10th and 13th starts, but 21 to 46 in the others. Overall ERA, 5.67.
Next, a 7 game stretch with a 2.07 ERA. That one started against us.
Then a 6 game stretch with a 9.00 ERA. His best game score in this stretch, 44, is worse than his worst in the previous, 49.
Finally, September, with a very good start against the Angels, a meh one against us, and bad ones against the Rangers and Blue Jays. His ERA as a starter was 5.50, so this may be the same as phase 1.

“It seems to me that the Rays could well start Hellickson and dump him for Moore at some point early in the game to turn the entire Redsox lineup around. The Redsox are designed for platooning in order to optimize performance. This approach can be used against them in this instance and I bet it will. They hopefully put up some good numbers against Hellickson early.”
Jose Lobaton of the Rays had Koji Uehara of the Red Sox stunned with disbelief. It was an amazing hit and finish of the game.
As far as the Braves are concerned, the second youngest team in the playoffs, the future looks good considering they won over ninety games this year with four of their top pitchers injured and carrying two regulars with under .200 batting averages. It's hard to imagine the Braves luck not being a lot better next year.

Like Hanley said, Fredi was never in the big leagues, and it shows in his decisions .
I think the Dodger players respect Mattingly because he's been in their shoes and has that to back his words. He makes mistakes with pitchers though but the team wins in spite of that.
