Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad said Monday that he doesn't agree with the decision by U.S. Rep. Steve King to display a Confederate flag on his congressional office desk. A measure to bar confederate flags from cemeteries run by the Department of Veterans Affairs was removed from legislation passed by the House early Thursday. The flag ban was added to the VA funding bill in May by a vote of 265-159, with most Republicans voting against the ban. But Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) both supported the measure. Ryan was commended for allowing a vote on the controversial measure, but has since limited what amendments can be offered on the floor.

NEW ORLEANS (WWL-TV) – The city of New Orleans has cancelled the start of the monument relocation bid process that was scheduled Monday as the matter continues to be stayed by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Congress passed a proposal on Thursday that essentially bans Confederate flags from national cemeteries. With a 265-159 vote, the proposal makes it illegal to display the Confederate flag in Department of Veteran Affairs cemeteries – even on individual grave sites that honor soldiers who fought for the Confederacy, except on Memorial Day and Confederate Memorial Day. Houston-The protest organizer at an Arabic Immersion Magnet School says it is ironic that the seventh largest school district in the U.S. is ignoring the Arabic culture’s “long and ongoing culture of enslavement” while stripping names off of schools of anyone connected with the Confederacy or slavery (and spending millions to do so). A proposal to stop the teardown of Louisiana’s Confederate monuments and step into an ongoing fight in New Orleans has failed to win support in the state Senate, blocked by Democratic lawmakers. Sen.
