  • Gov. Branstad criticizes Steve King's Confederate desk flag

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad said Monday that he doesn't agree with the decision by U.S. Rep. Steve King to display a Confederate flag on his congressional office desk. (SNIP) "I grew up in the North, Mr. Speaker, and the Confederate flag was a symbol of pride of the South," King said. He said the country had healed through the Civil War Reconstruction era and decades after and didn't like the division that occurred after nine people were killed.

Omowale was speaking in an interview set to air Sunday night on this reporter’s talk radio program, “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio,” broadcast on New York’s AM 970 The Answer and News Talk 990 AM in Philadelphia. Omowale used the interview to claim five states as belonging to the “Black Nation”: Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia. The revolutionary stated: “We just need to start migrating back to those states and taking control of the economics in those states. If black people move in, most definitely white people will move out. So it’s not a hard process for us to...

A measure to bar confederate flags from cemeteries run by the Department of Veterans Affairs was removed from legislation passed by the House early Thursday. The flag ban was added to the VA funding bill in May by a vote of 265-159, with most Republicans voting against the ban. But Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) both supported the measure. Ryan was commended for allowing a vote on the controversial measure, but has since limited what amendments can be offered on the floor.

In 1862, a man named Lt. Charles H. Colley of Gray, ME was killed during the Battle of Cedar Mountain. When his grieving family opened up the casket that was supposed to contain their son, they were stunned to discover that a fully uniformed Confederate soldier had been shipped to them instead. Having no way to identify the soldier, and also lacking the means to ship him back to Virginia, Lt. Colley's family decided to bury him in Gray Village Cemetery alongside the Union soldiers who had been killed in the war. They figured that this unknown Confederate's family would...

No historical evidence locates Confederate Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson on what is now Liberty Farm in Fauquier County, Virginia, on the evening of July 18, 1861, three days before the First Battle of Bull Run. So why would a prestigious state preservation group represent that as a fact? The current owner of the farm, Martha Boneta, has sued the Piedmont Environmental Council, a nonprofit land trust, accusing the organization of knowingly making a false historical claim when selling her the property. The environmental council, Boneta claims in the lawsuit, told her the celebrated Civil War general bivouacked on the open...

he Washington National Cathedral will remove Confederate flag images from its stained glass windows that honored Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, it announced in a statement Wednesday. The cathedral ordered a five-member task force to examine the windows in order to determine their future, the cathedral said in its news release. Though it voted unanimously to remove the Confederate flag images, the task force also decided to host a public discussion on the future of the windows to start July 17. "The Lee-Jackson windows call the question of race and the legacy of slavery and instead...
  • Trump Has Solid Lead Over Clinton in Georgia (Trump 49%, Clinton 40%)

PPP's new Georgia poll finds that the prospect of Democrats flipping the state blue in the Presidential race may have diminished with the unification of Republican voters around Donald Trump in the last month. Trump leads Clinton 45/38, with Libertarian Gary Johnson at 6% and Green Party candidate Jill Stein at 2%. Georgia's a state where Trump is unpopular (44/49 favorability), but Clinton is another degree more unpopular (33/60 favorability). Clinton and Trump draw pretty identical support within their own parties. Clinton's up 86/3 with Democrats, while Trump's up 84/3 with Republicans. That inherently would give Trump the advantage in...
  • New Orleans delays bid process for Confederate monument removal

NEW ORLEANS (WWL-TV) – The city of New Orleans has cancelled the start of the monument relocation bid process that was scheduled Monday as the matter continues to be stayed by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The decision to remove four monuments that celebrate Confederate era figures or events and the bid process to have them removed has been marked by controversy and court hearings. The city council voted late last year to have the Robert E. Lee statue at Lee Circle, The P.G.T. Beauregard statue near City Park, the Jefferson Davis Memorial on Jefferson Davis Parkway and the...

Congress passed a proposal on Thursday that essentially bans Confederate flags from national cemeteries. With a 265-159 vote, the proposal makes it illegal to display the Confederate flag in Department of Veteran Affairs cemeteries – even on individual grave sites that honor soldiers who fought for the Confederacy, except on Memorial Day and Confederate Memorial Day. Introduced by Rep. Jared Huffman (D) of California, the proposal received support from 84 Republicans and all but two Democrats. Rep. Sanford Bishop (D) of Georgia, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, voted against the amendment, while Representative Betty McCollum (D) of Minnesota...

Houston-The protest organizer at an Arabic Immersion Magnet School says it is ironic that the seventh largest school district in the U.S. is ignoring the Arabic culture’s “long and ongoing culture of enslavement” while stripping names off of schools of anyone connected with the Confederacy or slavery (and spending millions to do so). The leader of “Stop the Magnet,” Liz Theiss, also said she does not understand why the school would reroute school buses and parent pick-up routes where protesters were playing the Islamic Call To Prayer.

On a stage festooned with Confederate flags, a singer was belting out “Dixieland Delight” by Alabama near an obelisk honoring the Americans who fled to this outpost in the aftermath of the Civil War. “We’re not racists,” said Cícero Carr, 54, an engineer whose great-great-grandfather hailed from Texas. Wearing a fedora featuring the rebel battle flag, he explained in Portuguese, “We’re just revering our ancestors who had the good sense to settle in Brazil.” At the annual celebration of Brazil’s self-described Confederados one scorching Sunday in April, Confederate flags adorned the hoop-skirted gowns of young belles and the trucker caps...

Ever since Walmart pressured Arkansas to reject civil rights protections for Christians, and the #BoycottIndiana movement roped in huge companies like Apple, there’s been a confrontation brewing between Americans who demand the free exercise of religion, and big business lobbyists who want to keep their gay customers and stockholders happy. We saw it in Georgia recently, and now PayPal is getting in on the act in North Carolina. The question is whether politically active Christians can motivate churchgoers and other fans of the First Amendment to counteract high-dollar blackmail of the sort the NFL and Disney employed to cow the governor of Georgia...

Cruz has now beaten Trump in three Midwestern states (Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota—with Cruz having finished second and Trump third in the latter), one Northeastern state (Maine), three Plains states (Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas), three Western Frontier states (Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming), and one state outside of the Lower 48 (Alaska). A proposal to stop the teardown of Louisiana’s Confederate monuments and step into an ongoing fight in New Orleans has failed to win support in the state Senate, blocked by Democratic lawmakers. Sen. Beth Mizell, a Republican who lives 70 miles north of New Orleans, sought to create a state commission to sign off on monument removals. She told senators: “History is bigger than a single community or the mood of a moment.” The argument failed to sway Democrats on the committee, all of whom are black. …

Backlash against a plan to remove prominent Confederate monuments in New Orleans has been tinged by death threats, intimidation and even what may have been the intentional torching of a contractor’s Lamborghini. For now, at least, things have gotten so nasty the city hasn’t found a contractor willing to bear the risk of tearing down the monuments. The city doesn’t have its own equipment to move them and is now in talks to find a company, even discussing doing the work at night to avoid further tumult.Initially, it appeared the monuments would be removed quickly after the majority black City...

Shots fired! Bernie Sanders support group Progressive Democrats of America sent out an email after Tuesday’s primaries this week that has caused a civil war on the Left by stating that “Hillary won the Confederacy”. PDA compounded the controversy by attacking and blocking liberal critics–including a Black woman who called out the group. PDA has five Democrat Members of Congress on its advisory board, none are from the South: Rep. John Conyers (MI), Rep. Barbara Lee (CA), Rep. Raul Grijalva (AZ), Rep. Keith Ellison (MN) and Rep. Jim McGovern (MA).

Maryland lawmakers took a step Thursday toward scrubbing references to “Northern scum” and other Civil War-era phrases from the official state song. The Maryland Senate voted 37-8 for the changes, while also recognizing “Maryland, My Maryland” as the state’s historic song. Supporters of the measure, which now goes to the House, said it was a compromise that removes offensive language and recognizes history. …
