Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, after learning that several refugee families are expected to arrive in the Springfield area this week, has renewed criticism of local resettlement agencies, saying "enough is enough." In a prepared release, Sarno raised a series of questions about the arrival, saying he had received no advance communication from the Jewish Family Service of Western Massachusetts, the resettlement agency. "Once again, these resettlement agencies with no prior contact and/or coordination efforts with our city departments, use our Springfield as their 'designated resettlement site,'" Sarno said. "Yet when these resettlement agencies are asked to assist these families in...

President Donald Trump signed three new executive orders Saturday to “restore public safety and protect law enforcement” while addressing rising crime rates in communities across the country. The president’s first executive order directed newly installed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to “develop a strategy to more effectively prosecute people who engage in crimes against law enforcement officers.” The second order established a task force led by Sessions with the purpose of reducing crime rates and restoring a sense of public safety. The third order cracked down on the “dismantling” of “transnational criminal organizations” by redirecting additional federal governments resources. The series...

East Orlando Post obtained exclusive footage from UCF College Republican Douglas Mactye, which includes disturbing content involving an elementary to middle school aged student yelling "Kill Trump." The young children were being encouraged to hit the Pinatas by members of the Knights for Socialism for the duration.Mactye said it was sad to see his generation act like this. “Time to suck it up, stop crying, and move on.” The footage also shows a bearded man wearing an "Antifa International" sweatshirt, presumably monitoring the event for the Knights for Socialism. A Canadian man who was found not guilty for the beheading and cannibalizing of a Greyhound bus passenger due to mental illness has been set free. Manitoba’s Criminal Code Review Board announced that it gave Will Baker, formerly known as Vince Li, an absolute discharge Friday, meaning he is no longer subject to any conditions or monitoring, the Associated Press reported. The board “is of the opinion that the weight of evidence does not substantiate that Mr. Baker poses a significant threat to the safety of the public,” according to the decision. Baker’s doctor, Jeffrey Waldman, told the board he...

The first 50 bills introduced in the Michigan Senate this year contain many proposals dealing with criminal justice. These are the latest iterations of ideas that have been hotly debated in Lansing for several years. All of the following bills also appeared within a bundle of 2016 Senate proposals that occupied lawmakers and lobbyists well into December. They didn’t pass, but they’re already on the table for this year. Several of them echo last year’s focus on data collection. Three bills define the word “recidivism” as it is used in various places in Michigan’s law books. They also make a...

Shia LaBeouf’s controversial participatory art installation at the Museum of the Moving Image has been shut down. Operating 24 hours a day beginning on Inauguration Day, “HEWILLNOTDIVIDE.US”—created by LaBeouf with Rönkkö & Turner, just like 2015’s #ALLMYMOVIES—was established in response to Donald Trump’s election. It was mounted on a wall outside of the museum in Astoria, Queens, offering passersby the opportunity to say “He will not divide us” into a live-streamed webcam. In unfortunate contradiction with its messaging, the installation became a political battleground, as clashes between Trump supporters and opponents turned violent—an ugly distillation of what’s currently playing out...

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi lawmakers are advancing a proposal to add firing squad, electrocution and gas chamber as execution methods in case a court blocks the use of lethal injection drugs. House Bill 638 is a response to lawsuits filed by "liberal, left-wing radicals," said House Judiciary B Committee Chairman Andy Gipson, a Republican. The bill passed the House amid opposition Wednesday, and it moves to the Senate for more debate. Lethal injection is Mississippi's only execution method. The state faces lawsuits claiming the drugs it plans to use would violate constitutional prohibitions against cruel and unusual punishment. Mississippi...

A Swedish police investigator triggered a media tsunami with a Facebook post linking violent crimes with immigrants. Peter Springare received an outpouring of support from fellow officers and common Swedes, as well as some accusations of racism. Springare is a senior investigator at the serious crimes division at the Örebro Police Department with 47 years under his belt. In the Saturday post he said what he was going to say would not be politically correct and that saying such things could harm an officer’s position or pay grade, but he was about to retire and didn’t care.

Almost five years ago, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a "neighborhood watch" member as he walked home from a convenience store where he had purchased a juice drink and a package of Skittles. George Zimmerman, the man who shot Trayvon, believed him to be "possibly dangerous" because of his race and the fact that he was wearing a hoodie.
