Wi-Fi can pass through walls. This fact is easy to take for granted, yet it's the reason we can surf the web using a wireless router located in another room. But not all of that microwave radiation makes it to (or from) our phones, tablets, and laptops. Routers scatter and bounce their signal off objects, illuminating our homes and offices like invisible light bulbs. Now, German scientists have found a way to exploit this property to take holograms, or 3D photographs, of objects inside a room — from outside it. "It can basically scan a room with someone's Wi-Fi transmission,"...

I recently installed a Netgear Nighthawk X6 router. I've replaced the default passwords with 10 digit, random, unrelated characters. Two of my devices (a desktop and a laptop) are running Avast free virus protection. When I run an Avast scan, it says Service is vulnerable to attacks from within your network. When I click on their recommended solution, they say to update the firmware. I've gone to the Netgear website and it says all is updated. I recently vacationed in Colorado. I stayed at a private condo and used their wifi. I ran the Avast scan on my laptop. At...

Windows 10 S and Linux will not mix, according to Microsoft senior program manager Rich Turner. Just because Linux distributions are coming to the Windows Store, it doesn't mean they will work on laptops running Microsoft's streamlined Windows 10 S.Microsoft wants to clear up any confusion over two recent announcements. At the beginning of May it unveiled Windows 10 S, a fast-booting, locked-down version of Windows 10 that can only install apps from the Windows Store and is restricted to Microsoft's Edge browser. Windows 10 S ships with Microsoft's $1,000 Surface Laptop, as well as with forthcoming third-party Windows laptops...

For a quick minute, it looked as though a strain of ransomware that was seemingly stolen from the United States National Security Agency (NSA) was going to be a major problem for PCs around the world, and in particular Windows XP systems. Microsoft even made the unusual move of releasing an emergency patch for Windows XP even though it stopped supporting the legacy OS a long time ago. But now a week after the initial WannaCry outbreak it's been discovered that Windows 7 PCs were the hardest hit. A researcher for Kaspersky Lab posted a message on Twitter saying "the...

Question for our Techies out there. For the last few days on my Desktop Computer at home, I could not get on to the PamellaGeller.com and JihadWatch.org websites, but all else appeared fine. The Pam Geller URL brought me to one of those shady "This Domain is for Sale" pages, the Jihad Watch got me nothing. I cleared my browsing History in Chrome and rebooted my ISP's home Router, and now I connect to both legitimate Web Sites just fine. What does this mean? Was something in my Browser or Home Router corrupted or "attacked"? I did not know that...

1) Lack of Expertise: ……. is a particle physicist, not an expert in molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics & genetics (the combined, overlapping knowledge necessary for radiation biology). The focus of all big questions about the effects of low doses of ionizing radiation is the cellular, molecular level not the primitive concepts of “body dose” or “organ dose” which are based on crude physical models developed by – you guessed it – physicists. Interesting this is a comment I found in an old article (1/21/2010)on web, citing the rest is useless, as the article in my opinion was pure ‘poppycock’. The...

A co-founder of Twitter says he’s sorry if the popular social media platform helped put Donald Trump in the White House, as the president has suggested. In an interview with The New York Times, Evan Williams says Twitter’s role in Trump’s populist rise is “a very bad thing.” The president has credited Twitter with his election to the highest office in the land. When confronted with that notion, Williams said: “If it’s true that he wouldn’t be president if it weren’t for Twitter, then yeah, I’m sorry.” …

Ahhh, the resource is back. As popular as the Drudge website is, I never have and still don't like the format. Don't know if this is a resolvable computer problem. I've always had two desktops. One was for recording all TV shows that I would then watch without commercials. It was also the backup to the primary desktop but the machine recording video failed sometime last year. Tried to have it fixed to no avail. Got a replacement (refurbished) and put the primary disk drive in and up it came. This was in the shop where they take care of...

I am not a heavy duty user of Google Calendar, but do need it. Using something else for this application is not a choice. I get the message, "failed to save event" and "Oops, we couldn't save this event, try again in a few minutes" I really need to know what to change in my settings to solve this. I have searched for how, something about API, etc., but I don't know how to fix it. Thanks!

The so-called WannaCry virus once again placed the cyberactivities of the U.S. National Security Agency in a global controversy. Experts criticized the spy agency for not only developing a dangerous tool to exploit a vulnerability in Windows computers, but also letting it fall into the hands of criminals. ... After surfacing Friday, the attack continued to gather momentum. “I don’t see how it’s going to end,” said Phil Lieberman, president of Lieberman Software. “There’s this list of problems with security that have gone on for the last 10 or 15 years that weren’t fixed and that people didn’t take seriously....

Microsoft won a patent for augmented reality glasses that would provide a guiding voice at mealtime – whispering for you to consider grabbing a salad for lunch, rather than a greasy burger. The patent claims a device with image data would use a sensor to detect foods – and then provide feedback information to the user on the food's nutritional information. “A see-through, head mounted display and sensing devices cooperating to provide feedback on food items detected in the device field of view,” the patent abstract reads. “Feedback can include warnings based on personal wearer needs, general nutrition information, food...

Microsoft's Surface Laptop is aimed at supplanting the MacBook Air as a college-student favorite. The svelte, stylish clamshell also fills a middle ground between its cousins, the Surface Pro 4 tablet and Surface Book powerhouse 2-in-1, providing a third option that could appeal to many regular consumers. We went hands-on with the Surface Laptop last week and plan to test it in advance of its June launch. Until then, if you're trying to decide between the Surface Pro 4's promise of a tablet that can be a full-fledged computer, and the Surface Laptop's full-fledged computer that's nearly as light (and...
