Anyone tasked with handling the way data is moved around a processor deserves praise. It takes time, dedication and skill to design something that not only works appropriately and for all edge cases, but also can run at speed and seamlessly for software. The topic of interconnects has featured regularly over recent years, with cache coherent networks and unique custom designs entering both hardware released to the public as well as behind-the-scenes designs. This week sees the launch of the Gen-Z Consortium, featuring names such as ARM, Huawei, IBM, Mellanox, Micron, Samsung, SK Hynix and Xilinx, with the purpose...

Bullies could use VR to 'torture' their victims: Experts warn the technology may lead to psychological abuse 'The headset would take up the entire field of vision, while sounds could be used to block out the hearing, creating an eerie and hostile setting.' And it wouldn't just be a case of taking off the headset if you weren't enjoying it. The expert added: 'You would probably be restrained, so couldn't just take off the headset.'
  • Fight Fraud: Lets Have An Organized Pre-Election Vote

I know the logistics would be tough. But let's have an real organized pre-election vote or several. This can be actual paper ballot voting or a secure online forum. We can use this to counteract the coming election fraud. It can open to everyone. For those that don't know many states don't require ID to vote. Like NY. Democrats pick up thousands of voters on buses and let them vote over and over again. The same individuals voting in different voting locations over and over. Democrats pay out money, give them gifts, provide food, cigarettes, alcohol and other things. If...
  • Supreme Court hears Samsung v. Apple oral arguments Case addresses design patent damage awards

Case addresses design patent damage awards Samsung and Apple argued in America’s highest court today, capping off years of patent lawsuits with a debate over a tiny piece of the overall case. The arguments the Supreme Court heard today address how much of the profits from a product — in this case, a smartphone — should be awarded to the holder of a design patent when their patent is infringed. (A quick refresher: design patents protect the "ornamental design" of an invention, while the more familiar utility patents protect functional elements.)Samsung argued that the damages awarded in the case (some...
  • Like it or not, here are ALL your October Microsoft patches (Rolled-up Windows Update)

Microsoft is kicking off a controversial new security program this month by packaging all of its security updates into a single payload. The October security release introduces Redmond's new policy of bundling all security bulletins as one download. While more convenient for end users, who now get just one bundle, the move will irk many administrators, who had preferred to individually test and apply each patch to avoid compatibility problems. In total, ten bulletins have been bundled into the Patch Tuesday payload: MS16-118 is a cumulative update for Internet Explorer to address 11 security vulnerabilities, including six remote code execution...

The murder of a teenager found beaten to death with a rock by the side of a river in Utah went unsolved for 18 years. Local authorities scoured the highways and along the banks of the Provo River for miles in all directions. They came up with nothing, and the killer remained free. But a breakthrough in the 1995 slaying of Krystal Beslanowitch was made in 2013, with the arrest of a man named Joseph Michael Simpson based on what a sensitive new DNA collection tool found on the surface of the stone. Simpson was convicted of aggravated murder on...

There’s a device out there called USB Kill 2.0 (or USB Killer and other variants) that can fry an electronic device with a USB port. While it looks like an every day USB flash drive, rather than memory, these devices have capacitors that can store up juice being transmitted over the USB bus and then discharge at once. The result is a high-voltage attack on your PC, Mac, smartphone, or other device that can fry the electronics.YouTuber EverythingApplePro posted a demonstration video with one of these devices where he fried a PC and tried to fry an iPhone 7 Plus...

Samsung Electronics has suspended production of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones following reports of fires in replacement devices, South Korean media said on Monday, a further setback for the tech giant trying to manage its worst ever phone recall crisis. Samsung's decision to temporarily halt Note 7 production was done in cooperation with authorities in China and the United States, as two U.S. carriers have stopped exchanging or selling new Note 7 phones, Yonhap News Agency cited an unnamed source at a Samsung partner firm as saying. Samsung did not immediately comment on the Yonhap report. Problems with replacements for...

FAQ: Remember that tiff about how Galaxy phones look like iPhones? That'll be heading to the highest court in the land. The biggest patent case to hit the modern tech world is back again. Apple and Samsung will appear before the US Supreme Court on Tuesday to argue why their opponent was wrong when it came to a patent case from 2012. This is the first time a design patent case has been examined by the Supreme Court since the 1800s. A decision by the court could have a ripple effect across the technology industry and ultimately affect the gadgets...

Hot on the heels of the closing of the deal that divests its semiconductor business and places it in the hands of Globalfoundries, the former chip making business of AMD that is controlled by the government of Abu Dhabi, IBM and its academic and chip industry partners have announced that they have successfully etched chips with transistors that are 7 nanometers in size – significantly smaller than current processes and extending the Moore’s Law curve one more step.It is a big step, however, based on a mix of new technologies that have not been tested in volume production before,...

It is the display performance that determines how good and how beautiful everything on the Smartphone looks, including camera photos, and also how readable and how usable the screen is in high ambient lighting. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic A federal appeals court on Friday reinstated a $120 million jury award for Apple Inc (AAPL.O) against Samsung (005930.KS), marking the latest twist in the fierce patent war between the world's top smartphone manufacturers. The court said that there was substantial evidence for the jury verdict related to Samsung's infringement of Apple patents on its slide-to-unlock and autocorrect features, as well as quick links, which automatically turn information like addresses and phone numbers into links. Security researcher and former NSA staffer Patrick Wardle is this afternoon demonstrating a way for Mac malware to tap into live feeds from the built-in webcam and microphone. His presentation is being delivered at the Virus Bulletin conference in Denver later today.Although any unauthorized access to the webcam will light the green LED – a firmware-level protection that is exceedingly difficult to bypass – Wardle’s presentation shows how a malicious app can tap into the outgoing feed of an existing webcam session, like a FaceTime or Skype call, where the light would already be on … Wardle was the researcher who previously uncovered a way...

Why I want a robot nanny Ruth Margolis I'm a tech-phobic parent — not exactly the sort of person who gets excited about the idea of letting a machine watch my children. But when I heard about the newly developed iPal — a doe-eyed, 3-foot-tall robot companion — I couldn't help but see the potential advantages to struggling parents of young kids. So many of us are crippled by the costs of childcare, sleep deprived and, frankly, bored. (You try coming up with 37 different scenarios for "The Wheels on the Bus" before breakfast...) Is it really so crazy to...
