Brooks is recycling an article he wrote in 2008. There was a lot of criticism of his argument then.

He comes across sounding like one of those in the 1930s who saw their favorite variety of collectivism as the wave of the future. I suppose if we're in for a long depression or a new dark age he may be right.

But if the economy comes back and there's a level playing field, individualistic societies won't fall behind.

however . . . sometimes, I really need to limit the time and bother to really worthwhile polls.

—what my favorite Christmas Scone is?

—how to cure ingrown toenails—which I already know the best solution to . . .

—whether Christimas decorations should be red on green or green on red?

—whether Christmas hats with lights on them thrill my soul, or not [not usually]

—whether lawn decorations are best as wire frames or plastic air-filled or plastic-’cardboard’ or ??? [I don’t do lawn decorations or any other, for that matter].

—whether I send Christmas cards any more or just phone, email or text loved ones? I phone and email.
