The former president of Charlotte's LGBT Chamber of Commerce has resigned after he came under fire from a conservative group, which noted that he is on a sex offender list and questioned his role in supporting the city's expanded nondiscrimination ordinance. Chad Sevearance-Turner had been the president of the chamber, which supported the newly expanded ordinance that gives legal protection for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals. . . . Sevearance-Turner was arrested in 1998, when he was 20, and charged in Cherokee County, S.C., with a "lewd act, committing or attempting a lewd act upon a child under 16."...

Bob and Janet Cubbler freely admit that they're not the most technologically savvy couple around. But when it counts, what they may be is just a little more determined than most. "I'll try something, and try it, and try it again," says Bob. Which is exactly what he had to do when searching for a new insurance plan for Janet on the federal government's online marketplace, a site that has been paralyzed with problems. "It's very frustrating. I'm retired," Bob says. "So I have a lot of time. But I probably, for a long number of days, went on every...

CHARLOTTE, N.C...... ....Major donors will experience a very different convention than rank-and-file delegates who will fill the arena on Tuesday and Wednesday night and the Bank of America stadium on Thursday. Besides getting credentials to the sessions they also have access to the best hotels and VIP finance lounges — and finance staff who will provide concierge-type services for them. .....The best VIP perks go to those who donated at least $75,800 to the joint Obama campaign/Democratic National Committee fund-raising committee with more perks going to donors who have a track record of giving at least $122,400 from Feb., 2009...

What is going on in the Democratic Party? Have they abandoned all logic? It appears they will not deal with the issues that are facing this country at all costs. Any topic that clouds the issue is being explored as a topic at the Democratic Convention. The state of North Carolina defeated the “Same Sex Marriage” proposal, but the Democratic Party is including it in their agenda and is giving a lot of time to “free thinking” women. Obama has done such a miserable job with the economy that they have to stay away from anything economic. The administration has...

The host committee for the Democratic National Convention is raising a number of eyebrows after choosing to proceed with featuring Islamic “Jumah” prayers for two hours on the Friday of its convention, though Democrats earlier denied a Catholic cardinal’s request to say a prayer at the same event.

A busload of illegal immigrants has begun a month-long, cross-country tour of protests culminating at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., according to reports. Approximately 30 men and women departed Phoenix, Ariz., on Sunday on a trip scheduled to hit states that have passed aggressive laws against illegal immigration, reports the Charlotte Observer. The bus will pass through Colorado, New Orleans, Atlanta and several other cities en route to Charlotte, just before the start of the convention on Sept. 3, according to USA Today. “We are tired of the injustice,” Fernando Lopez, an illegal immigrant who is originally from...

A US Airways jet traveling from Paris to North Carolina was diverted to Maine on Tuesday after a "French" passenger handed a note to a flight attendant mentioning that she had a surgically implanted device, raising fears of a terror scenario that security officials had warned about. What is disturbing is the lack of coverage and relevant reporting on this act of terror in the skies. The would-be terrorist is described as a "French" woman. What's her name? Read the tea leaves. The Cameroon-born woman was traveling alone with no checked baggage and visiting the United States for 10 days...

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe said Wednesday that a shooting involving a man who killed a would-be burglar who was kicking down his girlfriend’s apartment door was “clearly a case of self-defense.” It took detectives and prosecutors a matter of hours to determine that the shooting Tuesday in a quiet east Charlotte neighborhood was within the boundaries of the law. “The (shooter) was defending himself and his property from a criminal act,” Monroe told the Observer. “It was clear he was protecting himself.” Self-defense laws have come under scrutiny in recent months after the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, 17,...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Casting North Carolina as an anti-union bastion with "regressive policies aimed at diluting the power of workers," more than a dozen trade unions affiliated with the national AFL-CIO have told the Democratic National Committee that they will sit out the 2012 convention in Charlotte, N.C. Coming on the heels of some liberals' complaints that President Barack Obama is giving in to Republicans, the unions' decision is another sign that key Democratic allies are unhappy with Obama and other party leaders as they gear up for a difficult election season. It's also a signal that anything relating to...

Around 10:30 PM tonight my son and I saw a bright green streak that appeared to be heading South to North toward Charlotte, NC. The light appeared to be going very fast, and accelerating on a downward path in the sky. I haven't heard anything on the local news about it.

The suspect, identified by police as 46-year-old Thomas Justice Freeman III, had been using bolt cutters in an attempt to snip though a live electrical wire in the 2500 block of Double Oaks Road, just off Statesville Avenue. Freeman was pronounced dead at Carolinas Medical Center, where he was taken by two other men also suspected of attempting to steal copper wiring. According to police, the three men met at Freeman’s home Wednesday evening and devised a plan to steal copper wire and split the proceeds after selling it. Freeman used his own 40-foot ladder and climbed about 30 feet...

(AP) Federal antitrust regulators on Friday cleared Wells Fargo's $11.7 billion acquisition of Wachovia Corp., capping a weeklong battle for the Charlotte, N.C.-based bank. The rapid approval comes a day after Citigroup Inc. walked away from its own efforts to buy Wachovia - which experienced a $5 billion run on deposits in late September after the failure of west coast rival Washington Mutual Inc., according to court documents filed Friday by Citigroup. Late Thursday, Citigroup broke off talks with Wells Fargo and federal regulators after the suitors failed to reach an agreement over how to split up the bank. San...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte-Mecklenburg police supervisors offered prizes to officers who wrote the most traffic tickets during an eight-day period over the July Fourth holiday. Five officers from the department's North Division earned $10 gift certificates to Dick's Sporting Goods, although officials Wednesday couldn't say how many tickets were issued between July 1-8. Police Chief Darrel Stephens and Maj. John Diggs, who oversees the division, said they were not aware of the contest until they were contacted Wednesday by The Charlotte Observer.
