WITH no shops, cars, restaurants or kiosks selling snacks, Aoshima is not the ideal hotspot for tourists. But cat lovers are not complaining. Aoshima Island is one of about a dozen 'cat islands' around Japan - small places where there are significantly more feline residents than people.

My new cats were freaking out. In carriers in the back seat of the car, they yowled their displeasure. I reassured them: “Don’t worry boys, we’ll be home soon.” Whoops! I had called them boys, when in fact they were girls. An understandable mistake, as I’ve had cats for about 50 years, and all of them have been male. “I’m going to have to work on using the right pronouns,” I thought. And then another thought: “Why? They’re cats.”

New art exhibit will trace humans' captivation with cats throughout history Thanks to the Internet, it can sometimes seem like cats have taken over every aspect of popular culture. Funny videos and goofy photos may be firmly under their furry paws, but now not even fine art seems to be able to resist their feline allure. Now, Massachusetts' Worcester Art Museum is hosting a new exhibition dedicated to cats in art from ancient Egypt all the way up to the modern day. Cat memes might seem like a modern phenomenon, but the expressive animals have intrigued artists for thousands of...

Bandito the pug is thrilled when his owner lays out two empty cardboard boxes on the floor for him to share with his feline friend. But Luigi the cat is not in the sharing mood as can be seen in this amusing video captured in Spain. At first the pair seem to be getting along just fine, but then Luigi wraps his arms around the pug and forces him out of one of the boxes.

SNIP And that hell became reality for two California felines on Tuesday, when high flood waters left them stranded in trees half-submerged in the Sacramento River. The Front Street Animal Shelter created a ramp that would lead the cats to safety, but they refused to cross. SNIP

My sweet little Cashmere passed away today. She was only 9 1/2 years old. She had quit eating starting Friday so by Sunday I was panicking and took her to the emergency vet. She had lost quite a bit of weight already, due to polycystic kidney disease. The vet said we could only get maybe another couple weeks with her with treatment at the clinic, so we decided to end her suffering. She has about the sweetest cat I've ever had. Cautious, shy, the undercat among her brother and sister. I always had to protect her and make sure she...

Felix used to be an everyday cat, just working her day job keeping mice at bay at Huddersfield Station in West Yorkshire, England. She was brought in by First TransPennine Express at only nine weeks old to help take control of the pests in the station and she really grew into the role. After five years of hard work she finally got the promotion she deserves. No longer is she a simple mouse catcher - she is now Senior Pest Controller, complete with the adorable visibility jacket, name tag and authority that goes with the title. Let's hope she uses...

Are you a dog or cat person? Does a dog's eager friendliness make him superior to an elegantly aloof feline, or vice versa? It's a debate that has divided animal lovers for generations. Now a new BBC documentary is seeking to resolve the question by discovering definitively which species has the edge: Britain's eight million cats, or its nine million canines. In Cats Vs Dogs, animal experts Chris Packham and Liz Bonnin team up with scientists and vets to put our two favourite pets to the test in a host of different categories. Think you know which one will win?...

Why one determined feline enthusiast has embarked on a quixotic journey to determine which basketball players own--or would consider owning--a pet cat. An otherwise ordinary basketball fan named Alex recognized someone walking into a recent Chicago Bulls game and thought: Wait, is that Dikembe Mutombo? Then something else occurred to him. "I thought about running after him and asking about cats," he said. "I'm really regretting that I didn't." Alex is a 34-year-old radio producer who enjoys cooking, gardening and meditation. He's also the anonymous owner of a website that, somehow, has become a cult hit in basketball circles. It's...

Ignore the thread link. It only goes to the FR Index page. Got some bad news today. JRandomFreeper has passed away, and that coupled with a good friend and neighbor suddenly passing away last October, I am in need of some relief for the depression this news has brought about. So, in an effort to dispel the gloom and provide an atmosphere for others to take their minds off of the loss of a good FReeper, I present this Oldie-but-Moldy concept. Hope it brings a smile here and there despite the tears. So: === Cats are better than women because:...

This is to such a great extent that the city has come to be known by some as 'Catstantinople'. While they may be pleasant to look at, the cats don't always have a saucer of food and a warm place to sleep. A kind Imam has decided to remedy this by opening up his mosque to the stray cats and kittens, so they can eat and safely rest their heads away from the perils of the outdoors. Imam Mustafa Efe calls the cats "guests" of the mosque, and they've made themselves quite at home. They sit down on the plush...

This is Merlin the cat modeling the dragon haircut he got courtesy of the Main Lion Cat Grooming Salon in Bumf*ck Paoli, Pennsylvania (it's behind the Starbucks on Plank Ave). I'm not sure how much the dragon cut costs, but their lion cuts go for $65, so probably somewhere around there. That might sound expensive, but if you live in Paoli, Pennsylvania, I imagine there's literally nothing else to spend your money on except saving up to move you and your cat the hell out of there.

When it comes to relaxing in a seated position, these cats are doing it wrong.Written by Chrissa Hardy Just a little people watching on this fine day. Via courageousrobot/Reddit Chrissa Hardy1 month ago 40 5 Cats are masters of relaxation. They can sleep anywhere, and without much else to do during the day, they live in a constant state of chill.Sometimes, though, they take easy livin’ to a whole new level… an extremely awkward level. They think that just because their bods are all bendy and they have nine lives, they can prop themselves in any position sans judgement.Well, cats, prepare...

One cat isn't exactly doing anything to dispel the notion that cats are jerks. A woman somewhere in what appears to be Russia uploaded a video on YouTube that will have cat lovers chortling and toddler lovers squawking in outrage. The video has received over 700,000 views in two days. A friendly orange and white tabby is playfully following a toddler in a puffy snowsuit through a field of snow and at first he appears amicable enough, continually rubbing against the little girl and wanting her attention. But when the kitty decided the girl isn't paying him quite the amount...

Freepers are such good sources of information (with an ocassional goofball mixed in) that I thought I'd reach out to get a little additional advice. Recently, my daughter got a major job promotion which includes a transfer to Japan. One problem with the transfer is that they couldn't take their cat whom my son-in-law, she and our two young grandsons adore. So we offered to take her for the duration of the assignment, probably about one year. She is a wonderful cat, sweet with the boys (doesn't bite or scratch when they get rough with her, just walks away and hides...
