Do you remember a few weeks ago when Planned Parenthood magnanimously offered to forego payment for its "donations" of baby body parts you know, out of the goodness of its heart? Well, maybe its heart is still a few sizes too small, because the abortion giant is still profiting hand over fist from this arrangement. Here's one of the dirty little secrets of abortion dealers: When an abortion is over, the growing baby has not magically disappeared. There's still a little boy or girl lying on a tray or in a machine. Abortion businesses know this. They employ "products of...

Cats have long been notorious for their picky eating habits, but a new study now suggests that humans shouldn't be too quick to dismiss a cat's selective behaviour as finicky. The study from the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia found that pickiness may not be the cause of feline food aversions. Instead, the presence of bitter tastes may raise cautionary flags to these carnivores.

The Paleolithic site of Schöningen in north-central Germany is famous for the earliest known, completely preserved wooden weapons or artifacts uncovered there by archaeologists under the direction of Dr. Hartmut Thieme between 1994 and 1998 at an open-cast lignite mine. Deposited in organic sediments at a former lakeshore, they were found in combination with the remains of about 16,000 animal bones, including 20 wild horses, whose bones featured numerous butchery marks, including one pelvis that still had a spear protruding from it. The finds are considered evidence that early humans were active hunters with specialized tool kits as early as...

As I sit in my office writing this, my 2-year-old tabby Spooky is sitting on the edge of my desk eyeing me intently. He is looking right at me with a stare that probably froze the blood of our ancestors 25,000 years ago. Of course, Spooky’s ancestors were quite a bit larger. Still, I have often wondered what is going through a cat’s mind when it stares at you like that. Fifty million years of mammalian evolution, all packed into that tiny, predator brain. Just what is it Spooky is mulling over in his head?According to a new study, cats are...

They are well loved for their immaculate fluffy coats and unique personalities but new research suggests cats do have a much darker side. A study carried out between the University of Edinburgh and Bronx Zoo compared our beloved domestic cat with its wilder relatives. Compared with the snow leopard, the Scottish wildcat and the African lion, researchers found these larger predators shared similar characteristics of aggression and neurotic behaviour to domestic cats.

Dogs Don't Remember: Episodic Memory May Distinguish Humans Dogs are wonderful creatures. Our dogs recognize me and are always happy to see me. Dogs are also smart and successful creatures. Our dogs have learned several cute tricks. But dogs (and other non-human animals) are missing something we take for granted: episodic memory. Dogs don't remember what happened yesterday and don't plan for tomorrow. In defining episodic memory, Endel Tulving argued that it is unique to humans. Experience influences all animals. Most mammals and birds can build complex sets of knowledge or semantic memory. You and I also remember the experience...

Charles Pope • October 4, 2015 • Here at Holy Comforter-St. Cyprian Parish in Washington D.C., we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (one day early, on Saturday, Oct 3rd) with the blessing of the animals. Although most folks bring dogs to be blessed, there are usually some cats and a few other animals like ferrets. Once, someone even brought a snake!Over the years, I have shared with the dog owners a list of “Things we can learn from dogs” (see below). When I was growing up, we always...

A Berlin court has ordered a cat owner to have her hairless Sphynx cat castrated – because it would be animal cruelty to let the naked pet breed. Willi, a Canadian Sphynx, belongs to Berlin cat breeder Jacqueline Linke. True to his breed, Willi is almost completely hairless – a quality that makes Sphynx cats popular choices for those with pet allergies. Despite his questionable appearance, Willi emerged as champion in the 2013 Pedigree Cat Exhibition in Berlin, and has gone on to become a proud father to three naked kittens. However, Willi won't get to pass on his genes...

You may think your dog has an irrational hatred of cats, but their instinct to chase felines out of their territory might be more reasonable than you think. Fossils have revealed the two species have a rocky past after the introduction of cats to the Americas had a devastating effect on the continent's species of wild dogs. In fact, it is thought that competition from cats caused up to 40 species of dog to become extinct in the region millions of years ago.
