Imagine if you could turn aggressive cancer cells into harmless fat. Scientists in Switzerland say they've done just that, in a new study in mice. By taking advantage of the "plasticity," or adaptability, of certain cancer cells during metastasis, the researchers were able to coax breast cancer cells in mice into becoming fat cells. The scientists accomplished this using a combination of two drugs, both of which are already approved for use in humans by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The treatment didn't convert all of the cancer cells into fat cells, but it did stop the cancer's...

A method for fooling breast cancer cells into fat cells has been discovered by researchers from the University of Basel. The team were able to transform EMT-derived breast cancer cells into fat cells in a mouse model of the disease – preventing the formation of metastases. The proof-of-concept study was published in the journal Cancer Cell. Malignant cells can rapidly respond and adapt to changing microenvironmental conditions, by reactivating a cellular process called epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), enabling them to alter their molecular properties and transdifferentiate into a different type of cell (cellular plasticity). Senior author of the study Gerhard Christofori,...

In light of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s history of cancers and most recently, a surgery to have cancerous tumors removed from her lungs as well as her absence from the bench, Dr. Joseph Bentivegna writes Bader, 85, is quite ill. Dr. Bentivegna, M.D. says the media who have commented on Ginsburg’s  health are “underestimating the severity of her illness,” and that “President Trump has a reasonable chance” of replacing Ginsburg in his first term. If Trump wins reelection, the doctor believes Trump has at least an 80% chance of replacing Ginsburg — we believe that chance is much much higher.The...

Kaitlyn Lee, an 11-year-old runner from Huntsville, Alabama, started small when she first began raising money to help children with cancer. It began when she was just 7 years old. Her first goal was to raise $1,000, which she set in July 2015 and reached by October. After Lee reached that, she wanted to continue fundraising and set goal milestones of $10,000 and $15,000. When she met those by January and March of 2017 respectively, she set a goal of $25,000, which she reached by September of 2017. Then, she decided to double down and aim for $50,000 in donations....

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is said to be "resting comfortably" after surgery at a New York City hospital to remove two cancerous nodules from her lung. It was not her first time dealing cancer, and the news prompted many questions about the 85-year-old justice's well-being. * * * She underwent a procedure called a lobectomy at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to remove the growths in her lung, which were found to be malignant. What is a lobectomy? Dr. Raja Flores, chair of thoracic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, said a lobectomy is a...

In what seems like a Christmas miracle, the inoperable brain tumor of an 11-year-old girl in Texas has disappeared, and doctors say they don’t know why. Roxli Doss was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, or DIPG, in June, as KVUE reported, and went through weeks of radiation. Her parents, Gena and Scott, prayed for a miracle and they got it. Her mom said: “It’s kind of our family thing that God healed Roxli.” The girl’s medical team are equally in a state of disbelief.

Classy: Nothing good that POTUS Donald Trump does will ever placate the perpetually triggered and angry American Left, but what he did for a 10-year-old girl battling stage four brain cancer this Christmas is worthy of high praise indeed. Cleveland resident Oliviah Hall has been battling a brain tumor since 2017 after being diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade IV. She was able to meet POTUS Trump during his midterm swing through Ohio and had a picture taken with him and her family.

Moon Fahel from San Antonio, Texas, had just gotten home from a martial arts class that he’s been taking for the last 15 years when he answered the phone call from Runner’s World. It wasn’t an anomaly—he stays busy with other classes during rest of the week, too: kickboxing, Zumba, athletic dancing, and BODYPUMP, among others. Plus, he just ran his fifth marathon this past Sunday at the San Antonio Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon. Oh, and he’s 85 years of age. She said she was disheartened when she turned to a worldwide registry of donors and none were compatible. "It was 30 million people," she said. "Thirty million people, and no matches for me." So Rabaca and the rest of her family partnered with Be The Match, an organization operated by the National Marrow Donor Program, to encourage people to register to donate bone marrow. Thanks to their fierce campaigning, Rabaca's story spread and gained attention from the likes of country singer Carrie Underwood, who asked her Twitter followers, "who wants to save a life for Christmas?" Researchers in Australia have developed a 10-minute test that can detect the presence of cancer cells anywhere in the human body, according to a newly published study. The test was developed after researchers from the University of Queensland found that cancer forms a unique DNA structure when placed in water. The test works by identifying the presence of that structure, a discovery which could help detect cancer in humans far earlier than current methods, according to the paper published in journal Nature Communications. "Discovering that cancerous DNA molecules formed entirely different 3D nanostructures from normal circulating DNA was a breakthrough...

I'm soliciting advice and experience wisdom from other FReepers who've been through this, as I am navigating unknown waters. Surgeon is recommending surgery (radical prostatectomy) but radiation is also an option. Lot's of questions and concerns. I'm soliciting advice from all quarters on this. Thanks.

A GENETICALLY modified virus that kills cancer cells and destroys their hiding places has been developed by British scientists. It targets both cancer cells and healthy cells that are tricked into protecting the cancer from the immune system. Fibroblasts, the most common type of cell in connective tissues, are vital in the body's healing process, but they can get hijacked by cancer-associated fibroblasts or CAFs. These then help tumours grow, spread and evade therapy. The new treatment, a form of immunotherapy developed by Oxford University scientists, attacks carcinomas - the most common type of cancer. Currently, any therapy that kills...
