Australian researchers develop 10-minute cancer test

Researchers in Australia have developed a 10-minute test that can detect the presence of cancer cells anywhere in the human body, according to a newly published study. The test was developed after researchers from the University of Queensland found that cancer forms a unique DNA structure when placed in water.

The test works by identifying the presence of that structure, a discovery which could help detect cancer in humans far earlier than current methods, according to the paper published in journal Nature Communications. "Discovering that cancerous DNA molecules formed entirely different 3D nanostructures from normal circulating DNA was a breakthrough that has enabled an entirely new approach to detect cancer non-invasively in any tissue type including blood," said Professor Matt Trau in a statement.

"This led to the creation of inexpensive and portable detection devices that could eventually be used as a diagnostic tool, possibly with a mobile phone," he added.

This is really great news. It will save many lives, because it will provide easy early diagnosis.

Even more interesting - nano particles of Gold seem only entangled with cancer cells.... The test is great but cure is better.

Does anybody recall a guy who was trying to use RF waves to eliminate cancer cells? He was going to try to find a metal that bound to cancer cells, and then blast them with RF... He was successful in trials - but he died, and the company holding the patents got tied up in a legal fight - the legal issues were recently resolved...this could be promising.

How specific is the test? Its been postulated that malignancies may occur not infrequently in otherwise healthy people but are quickly eliminated by the immune system. It is the malignancies that are able to get by the immune system that cause trouble. Still a very promising test. Eventually the test should be able to identify the DNA from the most malignant cancers and as mentioned previously lead to early diagnosis, identification and treatment. Best news of the day.

In medical research a single claim, regardless of how highly regarded the authors making it might be,isn’t taken as gospel. When this is confirmed by Harvard,Columbia,Hopkins,Mayo Clinic and Stanford *then* it will be news.

I am wondering about that also and the fact that any older man has at least some persistent prostate cancer cells. Perhaps different varieties of the test will eventually be developed with specificity toward different cancer types. If the test returns any significant “false positives” (including the naturally eliminated nascent cancers you referenced), it will quickly lose credibility and usefulness.

I’ve been aware of the Jerry Lewis telethon for around 50 years, all the time it was raising money for a “cure.” It got me to wondering - where are all the cures? We’ve run for the cure, danced for the cure, worn pink for the cure and yet - I have seen no headlines that ANY major disease has actually been cured in the last 50 years. The only one (and I rejoiced when I saw it) was a real and actual cure for Hepatitis C in 2014. Sure it cost almost $100K, but it was a cure. Today, almost 71 million people suffer from Hep C.

So, I’m still looking for those “It’s Cured!” headlines, but I’m not holding my breath.

Early diagnosis improves the chances of recovery and healing.

This test should be able to help with early diagnosis.

Nice try, but sorry. I used the 50 year limit for a purpose - medical science did discover cures in the past, just not recently.

Even then, most of the “cures” you cite are the result of immunization or antibiotics - both have been around for a long, long time. immunization is NOT the same as a cure and antibiotics don’t work on many diseases.

I actually had polio as a kid. Few children get it now because of Dr. Salk’s vaccine, but there is no cure for anyone who gets it and there never has been one.

Malaria is an interesting case. Not only is there no cure, but there’s an intensive and multi-decade search for a vaccine - so far with no results.

Just take your 10 diseases, one at a time, and search for “disease + cure.” With all the money donated and spent on research it’s quite disheartening.

Don’t forget Strep...strep killed entire families in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

A good point, but strep is cured with antibiotics. All the diseases that can be cured with them were discovered well over 50 years ago - long before “thons” and charities dedicated to finding cures. Today, many of them no longer claim they are looking for cures, but instead are trying to “raise awareness” (which means more donations.)

Soo many false positives. I have been in lab diagnostics for decades. In recent years i have seen a lot of fear caused by miraculous genetic testing due to the high false positive rates.
Read the fine print folks. We are closer.. we just aren’t there.

Ok, fair enough.

So how, exactly, do you define "cure?"

Hopefully the expeditious diagnosis procedure described in this article has some honest potential and is not just a scheme. But people like Elizabeth Holmes and her ‘blood testing’ fraud company Theranos are so damaging to legitimate enterprises. My fraud sensors are in full effect on this.

"Australian researchers develop 10-minute cancer test"

So about this 10 minute cancer, is that something that's exclusive to Oz? Cause I never heard of it here.

A vaccine is not available but a cure is not only available but common.
