CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Homicide detectives are turning over evidence in a deadly west Charlotte shooting to the district attorney to determine whether charges will be filed. Police say a Checker Cab driver shot and killed a man who robbed him just before 3 a.m. Wednesday on Columbus Circle.

Five Bethlehem police officers used excessive force to restrain a man high on crack cocaine who killed a drug dealer with a samurai sword and set him on fire, a federal jury ruled Tuesday night. Authorities are searching for two men they said were involved in a shootout with a Vancouver homeowner Monday night. Officers said the homeowner surprised two burglars inside his home on Northeast Benton Drive around 7 p.m. The homeowner told authorities that he confronted the burglars and he exchanged gunfire with the two men. There were no injuries reported.

A Hillsborough County man shot and critically injured an intruder in his home early Monday morning. A couple who lives at 286 W. State Road 60 found the intruder at around 1 a.m. when they returned home after being out of town for a few a days, according to a report from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. As the woman was calling 911, the man fired a shot at the intruder. The intruder was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition. The boy was part of a group of teens, numbering about four, who tried to rob the pizza store employee at the Huntingwood Pointe apartments in the 2900 block of Campbellton Road shortly after 10 p.m. Authorities said the driver, who works for a neighborhood pizza parlor, pulled out a gun and fired, hitting and killing the boy. Police did not say whether they planned on charging the driver, adding they were still investigating.

92-year-old woman was killed after she shot three Atlanta narcotics officers Tuesday night when they broke down the front door of her home trying to serve a search warrant, police said. One officer was hit in the arm, one was struck in the shoulder, and one was shot in the thigh. All were rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where they were in stable condition late Tuesday night. Police did not release their identities.

A South Fulton County homeowner was shot early Monday by a masked intruder claiming to be an FBI agent, police said. The suspect kicked in the back door of the home on Hidden Court, in a subdivision off Welcome All Road, about 4 a.m., setting off the home's burglar alarm, Fulton police Cpl. Gary Syblis said.
